Thread: Don't gobble??

    Default Don\'t gobble??

Last night at the hunter's ed. class they were saying that you should NEVER gobble when hunting turkeys. ( Cause another hunter could mistake you for a tom)

I've never hunted turkeys so I didn't know that.

What are the gobbler calls used for then????

Some people use them to locate the toms. Others probably use it to intimidate another tom. Get that tom all fired up and come in looking for a fight.

So it's OK to use them then??? Wonder why the game warden made such a big deal about it.

If your hunting public ground it is definitely NOT a call you would want to use, for the fact of having someone try to sneak up on the "gobbler" and end up mistaking you for him.

If your hunting private property I think you still need to be careful but can certainly use it.

huntin_girl I'll use a gobble call to call in those onry ol' gobblers that just won't come in to a hen call. The ones that tend to hang up and won't come a step closer are the ones I'm talking about. Sometimes all else fails when a gobble call will either have them coming to join buddies, have them come in to beat another gobbler out of a hen they've been hearing, which was the hunter, or does not either help or hurt the situation.

I would never use a gobble call on public land for pure safety reasons. On private property where another hunter moving in on me is the least of my concerns, that's another thing. I'll use one in a heartbeat if my arsenal of hen calls fails to do the trick. It's made the difference on several occasions between leaving the field a dejected turkey hunter or celebrating trickin a gobbler for me and some buddies I was helping out by doing a little calling for them.

Good rule of thumb is don't shoot any bird that you didn't call in. It's much safer, and you should never stalk a turkey.......you don't know who else might be doing it too, or where they are.

Locating other gobblers. Works good too.

On private land i see no reason why u shouldnt use them. but on public land u may have somebody stalking u. (that aint good)

This is exactly correct. Gobble calls do make excellent locators if you are hunting property where you are reasonably sure you will not be stalked by an "Idiot." Notice I didn't say "Another hunter."
