I'm pretty sure that they can loose a beard in the winter also...if it gets frozen from deep snow it can break off very easy. Did the bird you seen strut? If so...did he have a full tail fan? Thats the next way of telling a tom from a jake. [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img]
I saw a bird 3 years ago that had about a 9-10 inch beard in the winter with a big ol snow ball hanging from it about the size of a baseball.
That spring I shot a 22 lb gobler in the same area that only had a 4 1/2 inch beard. I am pretty sure it was the same.
I am sure they break off from the snow and Ice in my area.
Wigs
Lots of areas had that nasty ice and snow storm not to long ago. Yes I have heard it many times that it can break or tear their beards.
