is it illegal(not to mention unethical)to shoot a bird in the roost in your state?
Im not sure about WI, I wouldent do it, i would wait for them to fly down.
I don't think it's illegal here in Vermont, but even if it's not,,,, it something I personally wouldn't do....or I should say it would most definately would have to be a extraordinary circumstance..
Illegal in PA.
Illegal in Iowa .... wouldn't do it anyhow ... no fun in that ...
Steve
here in illinois if the bird is still in the roost by 7am you can shoot them out of the roost
It's not talked about in the WA state regs. Must be legal.
Would I do it? HMMMMMMM! I'll worry about that when or if the time comes. I sure wouldn't tell any of you for fear of being banished though. LOL. I've never seen a tom on the roost, just a couple of hens once.
Doesn't seem any worse than shooting them over bait though, which is illegal in WA.
illegal in TN
Not illegal here during legal shooting hours but I sure wouldn't consider it fair chase. Never have done it and never will. Not really a hunt IMHO. The fun and challenge in turkey hunting is working in a turkey and taking in the whole experience of the hunt. You miss that part and you're only cheating yourself out of what turkey hunting is all about.
to me where is the sportsmanship towards the turkey?
Isn't hunting about the hunt and the thrill of the chase. People who shoot birds in the roost aren't hunters, their slobs!
Turkey hunting is exciting and having them answer your calls is something that sends chills up your spine! Its a great feeling, why shoot a bird from the roost, your ruining all the fun!
Illegal here....even if it wasn't I still wouldn't do it. Takes all the fun out.
Dont think the handbook says, but sure it is illegal in TN to shoot a bird on the roost.
Its kind of disputed the way it is in the books her in VA. All it says is "Turkeys may not be shot at with bow and arrow or shotgun in the air." Some people think that that means you cant shoot them flying and others think it means you cant shoot them on the roost. Seems that the game wardens just say it says what ever supports them writing you a ticket once you do it around here though. I only know of maybe 2 G.W.'s who arent corrupt like the rest. I know that a bunch of the higher ups got fired because they used the tax-payers dollars on their budget and used it to go on an African Safari and to buy all of the Wardens 200 Dollar Knives. So they arent in the best of graces with the common folk as if they ever were around here.

Some guy's just don't get it about the magic of calls. They just can't seem to give up their deer huntin tactics. Lots of guy's try to ambush them like deer, some try to drive them towards waiting hunters, others surround the roost then send a guy in to flush them at legal shooting time giving at least one of the standers a flying shot, then theres the guy that will try to sneak up on them, all legal tactics that sometimes produce. Roost shooters though in my book are the bottom of the barrel, totally illegal here.
I find this practice to be highly unethical regardless of the law.
