My friend and I went out this morning early to listen for birds on this main property that we are hunting this season. We got into the field at about 6:15 and immedately the birds started talking. First, we heard only 3 birds roosted on the Eastern side of the property. We werent completely sure if they were on our property or on the hill across that road. It dosent matter much because we can hunt there anyways. Then all of the toms in that group started lighting up. There were five in the group. A couple were jakes. We could hear a hen cutting and yelping and the birds were goin crazy. Then another group to the west of us started sounding off. There were about 2-3 mature birds in this group. We could tell because they were much clearer and louder gobbles. We walked into the woods about 75 yards on this ridge between the two groups. We could hear more birds further to the west. I looked into the trees and I saw a black flash go through the trees. The birds were starting to fly down. It was about 6:35-6:45. I heard some fly down cackles. We were about 100 yards from them and they had no Idea we were there. My buddy didnt even have camo on! We left becuase we didnt want to spook the birds because they use that ridge regularly. We heard about 200 gobbles or more.
We were driving to a new spot and we looked down the railroad tracks and saw 3 jakes about 60 yards away. My buddy hit a mouth call and immedately they hit it. I even tried an owl hooter and I couldnt even finish my sequence before they gobbled. It was AWESOME!Even the geese were getting them to gobble. Now I have to go to class and dream about turkey season. Just thought I would share my excitement a little bit...lol. Good Luck to everyone this season!
