I'd definately say NO on that one, 40 yards is a comfortable shot shooting lead or the more dense shot out if your gun is patterned and sighted in accurately. But 40 yards, is well out of the effective range for the less dense steel shot. If i didnt have lead and hadnt patterned my gun, i'd leave it at home and carry the bow. Takes alot more impact and shot to kill a turkey than a duck.

i think itll kill but youd be stretchn it @ 40..... im a guide here in okla and we due our fair share of waterfowl....ive seen some 50-60 yrd duck shots but i dont think steel will kill a turk @ 40 it has a hard time kill a duck dead.

now if you were talking tungston or hevi-shot or bismuth you might be better off.....

i think id use high brass lead upland loads over steel... thats just me

if you think itll kill one and tyou have a good pattern go for it. i shot my first turkey with a mod choke and 7 1/2 @ 25-30 yrd and it killed him dead.

Dont know how effective it would be.

Not for sure whether or not that would even be legal here. I know the reg says here that min of 20 gauge and shot size no larger than number 4, but dont recall seeing anything about steel shot.

steel is not as dense as lead there for it doesnt hit as hard. Like getting hit with a ping-pong ball vs. a golfball.

why not go out and buy some turk loads you can get them starting around 7-8 bucks. thatll give you 30-40 yards pretty easy.

what choke and gun are u going to shoot?

That's what I was thinking. No offense but, how much trouble could it be to pick up a couple of boxes of turkey shot and pattern your gun. Just like tuning your bow or sighting in your rifle, you owe it to the game you're hunting to make sure your equipment will do what it suppoosed to do before you go afield. JMHO

This would be my suggestion too. If you are going to put the time in to hunt, might as well spend the little extra amount of money to use the right equipment to effectively kill your game.
