    Default KY Gobbler harvest (pic)

Take me back to Poosey, Poosey Ridge that is: a mountain ridge that runs directly into the Kentucky river. Last year I was able to kill my biggest gobbler at 25lbs. in the evening at Poosey.

This year, the day before season opener, I watched two gobblers chase a hen right past the tree that held my back just 12 months ago. I made a mental note, and constructed a plan to harvest another gobbler from that area.

This morning my unlce and I sat up on a known roosted gobbler only to find out that his hens was way more important that the ever seducing calling from my unlce. So, after two hours of frustration, we decided to goto the spot where we saw the other two gobblers. Sure enough, as soon as we arived, we heard them gobble. So, we grabbed their attention with some yelps and set out three decoys just over the ridge in a nice grassy area. Through the trees, we could see two gobblers work their way down the hill towards the bottom gobbling every time my uncle hit his call. With 45 minutes, two gobblers peeked their heads out from the timber to pin point that ole hen they had been hearing. A few more steps and my 870 was sending #4 shot down the hill towards the larger of the two. My unlce shot as soon as he heard me shoot, but he missed. Mine feel at 30 yards and the other gobbler set sail back to the ridge where he came from. I wish we could have had our double, but then again, at least one of us was able to get one of the longbeards. Kudos to unlces superb seductive calling, he made it possible for me to take a nice longbeard on KY opening day.

This bird was killed very close to where I killed my biggest gobbler last year. It almost had the exact beard. So, we decided to take the photo on the rock where I took my photo last year. We coined it, "Longbeard Rock". Hopefully many more gobblers will graciously lay their beard over the rock as we snap another photo of time not wasted at Poosey.

    22 lbs.
    3/4 inch spurs
    10 3/4 inch beard
