Last Night My brother and I headed out to our lease. We got there and threw up the tent and headed out to Roost a few birds. We got up on a hill that over looks a creek that runs into a lake. Ihit the Peacock call and i got a few gobbles. The next morning My brother decided to go to another spot a I went back to where we were last night. I headed down to the creek where the birds were roosted and got set up. Right as I sat down One gobbled about a hundred yards away. Soon another one chimed in an I thought I had it made. Of course the hens around them didnt want it so.Once the birds flew down the hens were on the gobblers instantly. I could see which way they were moving so I eased out and tried to head them off. I lost them in the process and decided to go up on the ridge i was on the previous evening. When i got there i mad a few calls and the gobbler responded. As i headed down there the cows started mooing like crazy. He gobbled a few times to them. I worked my way down there and caught a glimpse of him and his hens. They were 75 yards away and moving to my left. I went around and got where i thought they were going to go. They once again had other plans. I called on my glass call and heard him gobble. I started to make my way over there. As i was going throu some mesquites i saw a shiney black thing moving along. When i noticed its red head i got ready to shoot. Then i noticed three birds. They were all Jakes, but ididnt care since today was the last day i could hunt this year. They went behind some brush, so i belly crawled about 20 feet to get alittle closer. I yelped a few times on my mouth call and one popped out, buti didnt have a clear shot. I waited for a minute and he stepped out. The Remington Hevi Shot hit him like a ton of bricks and he went down. I racked in a newshell and click the safety over and went to take a look at him. The heavy shot knocked his eyes out of the sockets!! After he quit flopping to tagged him and took some pictures. When i got back to camp I weighed him in at 17 lbs. He had about 5 5/8ths inch beard and about 1/4 inch spurs. He aint the biggest but Ill take for a last day bird.
Heres a few I saw on the side of the road.
