    Default Jake bird down!

Went out this morning with my 11 year old son. We sat in the blind in the rain and drizzle, both pretty cold. About the time we were thinking of packing things up, I spotted some turkeys coming into the field we were set up over. They were about 100 yards away, and a few soft clucks and the decoys brought them in running. 4 jake birds, all eager to show off for the decs. Since my son was with me, I decided to pull the trigger. At 15 yards, 4's do a pretty good job. Definitely not the biggest bird out there, not even the biggest jake bird out there, but he will eat great and my son and I had a blast!

Well, it was his turn. This is his first year of hunting, and he is a little apprehensive about pulling the trigger. We both had our guns with us, he had his out the window till the birds were about 75 yards off or so. Then he pulled his gun in and said he didn't want to shoot. He told me to shoot, he didn't want to. Maybe he will be a little more into it next year, this spring just doesn't seem to be it for him. He likes to shoot his gun at paper and at milk jugs, but a live animal is something entirely different. Something he will grow into I guess, or maybe not at all. Time will tell.

He does want to go out tomorrow morning to the same place, he said he is going to shoot one just like mine. I told him that I hope he shoots a boss tom, and he can rub it in my face.

    Congrats on the Turkey Tom,,,

Your son will get into the spirit when he finally decides to pull the trigger,, I think you are doing the right thing by not forcing him to shoot when he's obviously not ready too... It will come in time, but for now you are doing the right thing IMO, in just enjoying the outdoors with your boy.... he seems to be enjoying that for the time being...
