Default Birds still hot in okla.

Hey guys went out coyote hunting this morning and heard 6 different gobbles, 3 on public and 3 on private we where hunting on the private. Heard 2 fly down and still gobbling, had a turkey call and called 4 all the way in, wish it was still season, all longbeards. We thought they where done, guess not.

Turkey season is over here, ended Sunday. The birds here never really got hot, at least not like they did 3 or 4 years ago.

I've heard gobbles almost every night for the last week. Don't know why, but around my house they didn't even warm up until the season was over this year. Oh well, there's alway's next year.

My theory about OK birds this year, at least in the southeast part of the state where I hunt, is that all three phases of the rut were delayed by the weird weather.

When the season opened in early April, they were still largely in the pre-breeding phase. We heard and saw good activity, and gobblers responded well to calling, because things were just getting fired up. Pecking order was being sorted out. Hens were being flirted with, etc.

This lasted into the middle of the season. The latter part of the season, all the way through and beyond closing day on May 6th, the birds were in the middle phase, breeding and henned up. Gobblers didn't need to come to calling 'cause they had plenty of hens with them. I watched three longbeards vying for love from seven hens just a few days before the close; the hens weren't shy and didn't sneak off to nest mid-morning, so the toms didn't have any incentive to break and head to calling over in the brush somewhere.

Sometime after the season closed, within the last week or so, breeding started wrapping up. At that point the hens increasingly shunned the toms, and so gobblers became more talkative and willing to walk to find any remaining potential mates.

If only we'd had a couple more weeks this year! Argh!

i agree, theres alot of activity after the season, but we did get alot of gobbling all the way through the season. We killed birds just about every week.
