    Default Beard question

After viewing some of the entries in the turkey contest, I was wondering how many of you pull/pluck the beard from the turkey and how many actually cut if off.

I usually grip the beard as close to the skin as possible and pull/pluck it out. It's clean and there's no excess skin or meat to worry about.

    How about you?

I have always cut mine off. Just for the fact that was the way my dad taught me how to do it.

Never even knew you could pluck it out, I'd be scared I'd pull some strands out in the process. Always cut mine out and trim the fat.

I've always pulled it off, hold it at the base and pull. In fact my 9 year old daughter has pulled the last few off. Never had a problem with one breaking and I've been doing it that way for 10+ years.

I used to cut them out till I saw someone do this. Then it dawned on me. A beard is just a different kind of feather. Why the heck not pluck it.

Been doing that way ever since. Works great and no more stinky beard ends

I pull mine out. If fact my son jumped the gun this spring. He was so excited that when he grabbed the gobbler by the neck and picked it up he didn't realize he was standing on the beard at the time. We didn't notice it until the second picture. It was plucked clean out and laying on the field road where the tom layed.

I cut. The extra flesh is good for keeping the beard mounted in my mounts. I mount my own birds and if I just plucked it then there would not be much left to hold it in place.

I always cut mine and trim the fat too. I've known about plucking them out for a while but always worried about pulling strands out so I just kept doing it the safe way. I sure don't want to pluck double beards either.

What I've always wondered about pluckers is, what do you do with the birds that have multiple beards? I wouldn't think you'd pluck them out and seperate them.
