    Default Questions about locating turkeys

I think a little background is in order here. I have hunted turkeys for the last four years up here in Wisconsin. However, this past deer season, it was brought to my attention that my farm in Southern Ga(sumter Co, outside of Andersonville for those who are wondering) has enough gobblers on it to start hunting them. Nobody who hunts my land down there has hunted turkeys before besides me and my dad, and they are all interested(and i would really like to get that tradition going down there as well). The only problem is, i have no real clue how to locate them. When i hunt them up here, my friend and i would go out, and he would decide where we went. What kind of calls should i use to find them(the only call i have is a Diaphragm)? If anybody who hunts turkeys in/around Sumter Co could help me out with the habits(if they are any different from the gobblers up here), i would be very greatful. Thanks.

Find water, then look for droppings that's where they are roosting,,don't use turkey calls to locate them, use crow, owl..

Get in the woods early, and walk, use locator calls, and listen. Preseason scouting is very helpful. Look for droppings to find roost locations, tracks, water and food sources, and you will have a god chance at finding them on opening day.

How big is the property?? Gobblers are a pretty conspicuous bunch right before sunrise in the spring. Here in the PA rolling hills, it's nothing to hear them over a mile away. So, even if you can't scout pre-season, it shouldn't take you too long to figure out where they are on opening morning.......just before sunrise.

i'm from spalding county prolly about an hour or so from your property. at sunrise try to locate the birds with an owl. you could possibly get one to respond to a coyote howler. as the morning progresses use a crow call to strike one up. i wouldnt think it would be different than what you are used to doing. i could be wrong. best of luck to you. hope this helps you some.--Jake

The guys above just about said it all. Just go before the season and listen. If you dont hear any chances are that they are roosting near water. A couple weeks before the season at about mid-day, walk around and look for droppings at the base of trees.

If you do hear birds then you are good to go. try to listen to where they fly down at without being called to. That will give you a better idea on where to set up. They will most likely be more inclined to come to your calls if you are already in a place they want to go. Best of luck this season!
