    Default Turkey in Mississippi?

Hey guys. I am thinking about possibly going down to mississippi to hunt turkeys in March. I have never hunted there before and I was wondering what the best area for a non-resident turkey hunt would be. I am planning on applying for the tag drawing but the deadline is Feb. 15. Where is the turkey population the highest or what area would offer the best hunting. I am looking at the Tallahala area as of now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

NEVER HEARD OF A TAG DRAWING FOR TURKEY HUNTING IN MISSISSIPPI.

IF I WERE IN YOUR PLACE, I'D BUY A WMA PERMIT, AND AN OUT OF STATE LICENSE. THEN YOU CAN HUNT ON ANY PUBLIC LAND IN MISSISSIPPI, AND THERE IS TONS OF IT. FOR MORE INFO/HELP, GO TO www.MDWFP.COM THERE IS ALSO A FORUM THERE THAT MAY OFFER ASSISTANCE.

Some WMA's have a draw for turkey permits while others don't.

To be honest I haven't turkey hunted public land in 20 years or so. Here's what I think based on recent years' hatches. District 3 (delta area) should be pretty good. Unlike the rest of the state the delta had a good 2004 hatch and an exceptional 2005 hatch. Their 2005 hatch was better than any other part of the state. There should be a lot of 2 year old birds in that District.

We had 2 back to back years of bad hatches (2003 & 2004). Last year the east central part of the state had a bad hatch too.

Check the MS web site posted above for districts and WMA.

Some places like Malmaison have a draw, but it's only for the first couple of weeks.

Rhino is right about the bad hatches in recent years. I'm in the north central part of the state on the edge of the delta. I would prolly try the delta area. As fore mentioned, try Malmaison

Hey Woodsman that area would be good choice. There are a lot of birds in the area you’re talking about. I’ve got a good friend that took a huge bird in Bienville last year that is in the top 20 in the State. The best advice that I can give you (from a public land hunting perspective) is to hunt during the week and hunt hard from 9:30 to 2:00, that’s prime time for birds on public land. Also be prepared to walk a good bit, its well worth it. Good luck on the draw hunt, but if you don’t get drawn it will turn out good also. Most all of the folks that camp out on the public lands will be gone by then (Their state's seasons will be open). When I was at MS State I went on a Tuesday morning (first week) and counted 31 trucks in a one mile stretch. We passed them up and went to another road where we had roosted a bird the day before, as soon as he started to gobble 5 trucks pulled up around my truck and started call, hooting, crowing, howling, and screaming like a peacock. After the first week it gets back to normal.
I know of a few more areas a couple of hours north of where your talking about going I’d be glad to share them if your interested just shoot me a pm and Ill give you some more info.

With my luck the way its been, I would be plenty happy to just hear one down there.
