They might be getting the pecking order set up and trying to establish flocks of hens for the breeding season, but I think that for the most part, they aren't even thinking about breeding just yet.

I've heard a few guys from the MS wildlife forum say they have heard a few but for the most part it is still a dab early. I suspect they'll hear some this weekend. I haven't had a chance to get out but next week if this weather holds up i'll be getting out there and trying to zero in on one.

They haven't started here yet but they usually start breeding around here around the second week of March.
It'll be here before we know it.

I have been out and about working on my place the last week. I have been seeing quite a few gobblers eveyday while dozing fencelines and senderos. Have been hearing gobbling through out the day too. The agarita(current) bush has come into bloom( it's put off a swwet smell too ) and that's a reminder that spring is here in South Texas.

Here is a picture taken yesterday afternoon in front of my camp house protein feeder.

from what ive heard about the breeding season on turkeys is that they go off of the day length more than the weather. Look at how much longer the days are in april than now.

Gobbling activity starts picking up during the last week of February every year around here. Like huntingguide said breeding season is not a weather dependant thing. For as long as I can remember gobbling activity and breeding occurs about the same time every year down here. That's with about 35 years of spring turkey hunting under my belt now.

You're right, that smell always reminds me of Spring.

And yep, it's been a gobblefest for the past couple of weeks now.

    Ah, a Rio. . . . . great bird.

We pulled the camera cards last w/e and had pics of a pair of boys strutting for their girlfriends.
