Season is going good!!

Well, it was a plan that worked. Rarely does that happen. LOL I had to work until 8am this morning and instead of taking off, I decided to do the midday thing.

I got to our place around 9:20 this morning. I had to stop in Collinwood, TN and buy my license. (lol) I saw some birds in our bottom and tried to pull the ambush but they were gone when I stuck my head out of the creek. Anyway….

I went to a place nobody hunted this morning that always has birds. About 10:45, I got to the first plot in the mature pines and got a shock gobble across a hollow near another plot. I set up but nothing. Wind was awful. After 20 minutes or so, I heard him gobble and heard some hens with him. GRRRRRR Then, a few minutes later, he gobbled again up higher. I decided to back up and circle around. The road he was on T’s in to the road I’m on. I circle and get to where the roads meet. I sat down and just listened for a while. After a few minutes, a bird gobbled down that road about 75 yards but off the other side. I figured he was headed to another plot on down. I let out a few yelps and GOBBBLLLLEEEEE. I clucked and yelped again and GOBBBBLLLEEEE!

Oh yeah, he’s hot…..but where is his hens I thought. I called again..GOBBBBLLLEEEEE. Yeah, I’m thinking he is being nice. But oh no, he’s getting closer and now the game is starting to heat up. I call again and GOBBBBLLLEEEE. Yes sir, then another gobble and now I’m thinking there are two birds. Well, I shut up and wait a couple of minutes. I purr and yelp real soft on the ol Primos diaphragm and GOBBBLLLLEEEEEE. He is close, maybe 60 yards behind some dirt mounds and I’m thinking he has locked up. But oh no, my tricks are still in the bag. I start purring real aggressive and cutting but not hard.

Then, I shut up. I wait maybe 2 minutes and yelp again real soft. GOBBBBLLEEEEE. He’s in the road, just around the corner and then it happened. You turkey hunters know the feeling…like the deal is closed. I started smiling as I knew he was dead. Then, three he was, rounding the corner and coming right at me at 35 yards. I let him soak it in..you know…..that feeling of OH S@$T, there’s no hen here. LOL I gathered my thoughts, took it all in and let the Hevi-Shot fly. Flipped him like a high diver.

Good solid 3 year old. 1” spurs and worn down 9” beard. He had been strutting as his beard was ugly.

He was 18lbs, about average for 3 year olds on our place.

Year has started good. I’ve been in the woods 5 days and saw 3 turkeys hit the dirt. Two in Georgia and now one in Tennessee.
