What time should I start calling?

Hey guys, I am fairly new to turkey hunting, I am going out for the first time on saturday morning. I just bought a box call and am somewhat ready to go. However I dont know what time to call, and what Kind of call (I.e yelp,) to use. If you guys could help me on this that would be great.

Something that works real good for me in Indiana, is to use a locator call to find their roost. Get set up in a fly down zone, and wait. The birds usually stay very vocal on the roost (where i hunt anyway). After they fly down you usually wont hear anything for awhile. about 10 minutes or so after that period of silence, I will give 2 or 3 fairly long yelps to find there range. After that its cat and mouse my friend.

Yeah I did, however it did not give me a time I.e 6 oclock. That is why I asked my question again.

Start calling the second the gobbler's feet hit the ground. Turkeys don't have wristwatches........or wrists, for that matter. There is no specific minute of the day that you have to "punch in" and start to work. Turkey hunting is ALL about listening to what the gobbler tells you he wants and you giving that to him. When you hear the wingbeats from his flydown stop........you start.

If you're set up near a roosting area and the hens start with their "tree yelps", try to mimick them. Don't get too agressive though. Idealy what you want is for the hens to fly down to check you out with the tom following. You probably won't call in a tom if he is roosted near hens if the hens go the other way bacause the hens he is with are more of a sure thing. So try to peak the hens' curiousity and lure her in, I guarantee the tom will follow.

yea i think you should start calling about 20 mins afteror so after teh first light or before that if you hear them fly down

I would start calling once they are on the ground. If you call to them while still on the roost you could make stay on the roost longer than usual.
As for what call to give them, and being new to turkey hunting I would stick with yelps and clucks.
Little is better, meaning don't over call to them.

I wouldn't start calling until 6:49. They seem to respond good at that time. J/k bud, you might want to give a few soft tree yelps while he is on the branch to let him know your there. I'm assuming though with your lack of experience that you do not have any birds roosted or located. So if your going into it blind I would start calling at daylight and hopefully find a bird willing to play. These ohter guys advice is great as long as you are near a roosted gobbler. If not set up in an area where you think birds may come and gives some yelps and then be quiet for 30 minutes. If nothing then move on.
