April 7 is youth day here in VA. Well last night I put the birds to bed with the wind blowing and colder than whiz. We got up this morning to 20% weather and the wind blowing. I woke my 7 year old boy up and ask him if he wanted to go ( I was hoping he would say no, and I could get back to bed). We went and got my brother and headed off to where I had roosted the birds. We were hunting out of a ground blind, which worked excellent. At daybreak even with the 20% the turkeys were gobblin big time. Before long they were on the ground and headed our way. Finally one of the gobblers was in range but instead of going to our decoys he circled on the other side of us. So here we go trying to get my 7 year old boy to the other side of the blind without scaring the turkey. Well he liked to have fell through the blind when he tripped over the chair. He got his gun out the window with the turkey at about 15 yards, with the turkey noticing that and becoming alert. Well he couldn't see the sight, so I had to raise the blind a little more. This really put the turkey on alert. I said to myself, If we pull this off we will be very lucky. He was shaking and moving and I told him when he got it on the turkey to pull the trigger. Some how he managed to kill the turkey. I guess the man upstairs was a looking down and smiling. Even though it was cold it was a perfect day with a happy ending. It don't happen to much like that in turkey hunting.
