Default 2 More Down In Oklahoma

We finally got a good day that actually felt and looked like turkey weather 55-60 degrees no wind and blue. Coming off last weekend we had snow and lows in the 20's not to mention the 30-40 mph gusts. Somehow we managed to harvest 2 birds for the georgia boys, well today was finally my turn.
Started off today at work and dave went to class, i was suppose to be there but in order to get off work early i had to skip class and work through my lunch. I was beginning to have second thoughts as my stomach turned while i was mowing. Anyway noon rolled around and i got off work and Dave got out of class so we loaded up and headed north to my honey hole. We where killing ourselves on the drive up saying that we should have been here in the morning it was so nice. Still any time in the woods is better than anywhere else. As we pull into the field to park a black spot catches my eye . After further looking we both decide that it was a very mature gobbler sporting a very nice beard, the only problem was he was right between us and our blind. We watched him walk down the field and disapear into a fence row so we made our mad dash across the field. Once we glassed the field from the edge to make shure that it was clear we set up shop;2:30. We hadnt been in the blind for more that 15 minutes when we heard gobbles coming from the north about 400 yards down a creek bottom. I knew that they would work this way because they do every afternoon, and they would end up in our laps. I couldnt resist the rolling gobbles from what sounded like 4 or 5 birds so i hit the Glasswitch, i didnt even get the last yelp out when dave pointed and said there. They must have gobble for 5 seconds and all together. I didnt need to call anymore because they sounded off every 10 seconds until they where 60 yards out. We could see 2 red heads coming through the timber coming our way. We saw that they were 2 jakes and i ask dave if he wanted a jake, he cut me off with a are you crazy its got a red head. Dave hadnt been able to get out and turkey hunt for a couple of years due to a broken back he sustaind in a bull riding accident.
Anyway the 2 birds worked with 25 yards and as i was filming i told him "whenever" that was all he needed, he let the #5's loose, and the bird didnt even know what hit em'.
After some high fives and and heavy breathing dave went out and got his bird. It weighed 21 lbs, 5 inch beard, 1/2 spurs. After stashing the bird and settleing down we had i bite to eat and watched the film a half a dozen times or so.

At about 3:30 we heard some hen yelps behind us in a coner of another field that i regularly see birds. With a couple of soft yelps i got a quick CUT CUT CUT YELPYELPYELP, i thought this could be good or bad she either wants some company or shes going to go the other direction. About 30 minutes later dave catches movement behind us and he said "2 hens coming this way", then closely behind was the daddy. As the hens walked towards the decoy we could see his beard swing back and forth, I think i tasted my heart for about 10 sec because i didnt know if they where going to come or work away. The window was closed so this added to the nerve racking, i couldnt stand it so i peeked out the 1 inch portion of window i had left un zipped . They where right there 20 yards and closing from my left, as the lead hen yelped i drew my bow with them still out of sight. As they appeard in my shooting window they where only 16 yards away with a big black ball of feathers right on there tails. As dave was filming i ask him if he was ready he said yup.

As i let go and watch the arrow sink into the wing i heard dave say "I really messed that up" I didnt really pay to much attention as i watch my prize flop only 17 yards away. He said " I didnt get it I accidently hit the pause button while you shot, but i got it back on while he was flopping". Honestly i didnt really care but it would have been some awesome footage, the only thing i cared about was my Tom turkey right out side my window.
    22 lbs, 9 8/16, 1" grey spurs

This is just a testament to the idea of killing birds in the middle of the day, it can be done. We where loaded up and headed home at 5:00.

Heres some pics from the afternoon.

I give credit to Covehnter for the idea for this pic its just to cool.

Very nice! My father has been trying for a bow-bird for a while now, hoping to come up lucky this spring.

    Congrats on the good birds!
Some people go to church and think about hunting. Others go hunting and think about God.

We do have some awesome turkey hunting here in Oklahoma. The Wildlife Department got it right by re-introducing them here. I love it, gonna take a few more before trying them with my bow though...congrats sounds like you guys had a great hunt.
