89importeater, here in WV we have to stop hunting and be out of the woods by 1 pm. in the Spring Gobbler Season. Think it reduces accidental hen kills since most brooding hens stay on the nest while it's cold and don't leave it until the day warms up so as not to kill the unhatched poults.

    Thumbs up

Same here in NY, we have to be out of the woods by 1pm, quit hunting at noon.
I sure wish we could hunt all day though, this would give us more hunting time. The states that have all day hunting, say it doesn't effect the turkey populations with an all day spring season.

Having the afternoon hunt is great if its available. It gives you more time in the woods and like hoyt hunter said. Getting between them and wherethey roost is good tactic. Especially if theres limited areas for them to roost. Sometimes in dense woods yould have your work cut out for you since they have so many options. I killed 1 in texas last week in the evening.
    good luck,

read my post 2 More Down In Oklahoma we killed both of them in afternoon, one @ 3:00 and the other @ 4:00. Do your homework and you can kill them anytime of the day

If you can legally hunt the afternoon you're foolish not to. Turkeys don't become nocturnal like deer, every daylight second is fair game.

It's been my experience they aren't nearly as vocal in the afternoon so don't expect them to respond. They sneak in quietly. Do your homework and know where the birds are spending the day and you will connect.

Killed mine this year at 6:00pm. Sun wasn't setting for at least another hour and 15 minutes.

Yup., get between where they are, and where they roost. If that fails.."roost em and roast em"... meaning.?..(come back in the morning and wait till fly down)

In Georgia you can hunt all day. My cousin down there killed a bird this year at 5:30 pm. He was walking to the truck to leave and a bird was gobbling his head off a few 100 yards from the truck. Made a few calls and two longbeards ran in. I'd say anytime during the day is good for taking turkeys.

I have shot most all of my birds in the afternoon. Like stated before: find where they roost and get between them. Most were killed because the hens had wandered off and they are lonely that time of the day. I love hunting in the afternoon!!!!!!!
