    Default Finally Got Him!!!!!

Well, after 3 weeks of heartache and stress, i finally got my bird.

I had been hunting this bird all season, as he was easy find, gobbling every morning and letting my know where he was. Although he would gobble his head off, as soon as this bird hit the ground you wouldnt hear another peep out of him. So after a few morning i went to another property and bumped a bird i had hunted for a few days and was starting to get awfully disappointed. So, after the weekend i decided i would try again for my original big boy, but go in with a little different strategy. on the other mornings i had hunted him, i had tried every kind of hen noise one can make, soft yelps with some purrs, hard cutts and yelps, even tried using 2 calls to make it seem like 2 hens were fighting, to no availe. So this morning i thought i would just sit and wait for him to come to me, like deer hunting. so i set up about 80 yds from his roost sight and waited for light. sure enough, he started boomin right at first light and the hens soon followed. then, i see one, two, three hens heading my way and not far behind was the big boy in full strut. the hens came right at me, one of them i probably could have hit with my gun, but the big boy would not break strut and come. finally, after the hens had walked past, he started heading right for me and just as he came from behind a big maple, i threw 2 cutts at him, he lifted that big 'ol white head of his, and i let the 3" #5 Winchester Supremes do their work. Put him down at 30 steps. Unfortunately, he had had a tough winter and had some severe beard rot. Although he was a mature, double bearded gobbler, the 2 beards added up to 4". weighed in at 18.1 pounds with 7/8 inch spurs. although he wasnt the most impressive bird, i took great pride in him because of the hard work and effort it took to get him bagged.

nice bird man, i know what you mean i hunted a couple of gobblers like that this season for about 3 weeks. They would gobble every morning all day long and would ever come. Finally the last day of the season with some soft yelps i pulled them in and was able to take one. Congrats on a great bird

Great job on the bird! How long is your season??????? I wish ours was that long! We got 4 seasons split up between one month, roughly.

    Take care,
    Nathan
