Default Mouth call - what was the heardest to learn for you?

I pulled out my mouth calls today - hadn't had them out of the juice since my season ended a month ago. I've been wanting to practice and only now put my thoughts to action. I've got a 20-30 min drive back and forth to work so I can get some decent practice time in just driving. I am trying to find the right combo to get a good purr going. So far the purr has been my weakest on the mouth call.

How about you? What took you the longest to feel comfortable with? Clucks, cackles, purrs, etc...

I would have to say the purr seems to be my hardest to do on demand.

To be totally honest, once I mastered not gagging on the call, I was set. I learned all the different types of calls as I messed with it. Purr is pretty easy I think, just use your lips and you'll purr just fine. My favorite calls are raspy yelps and cutts. Get's them gobblers all fired up. Always.

Joe, the Mini Sonic Dome from Primos, is a smaller frame call. It is also one call I never had to cut down to fit my mouth. Just last week I tried some of the other normal frame calls. I wound up throwing them all away! They are too big which can also trigger the gagging reflex. Hopefully Primos will keep these calls for a very long time!

Only call I had trouble with was the kee-kee, which is used in the fall.

Gobbling was hard for me for a long time until someone told me to "just shake your head side to side" as I did it, then, voila!

I've not seriously tried a gobble. I know a person's success can change from call manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, I popped in a call on the way to work today that I bought after I was done hunting and hadn't really tried out. By the time my 25 min drive was over I was pretty pleased with my purrs. Not to say some longbeard would be but compared to what I had it was much better.

Mouth calling is a touchy subject with me. Don't get me wrong...I can call and feel pretty confident with them. With that being said there is not one single call that I feel was the easiest to learn or one that was the hardest. I feel that it is something that I will always be improving! JMO

Without a doubt purring on a diaphram call took the longest. Purring on a diaphram is still not something I'd choose to do in the woods, especially in a pressure situation. Now how long has it taken me to get to this point. Hummm...been using diaphram calls for over 25 years. I just can't remember when I decided to first try using diaphram calls. Doubt I'll ever get to purring on one that will sound close to as good as any one of my slate calls.

Purring has been very difficult for me, too.

One way I "forced" myself to get better is to always have a diaphragm in my mouth while hunting. That helps it be my "go to" call, especially in some quickly developing situations.

I've read the suggestion that to get better with a mouth call, one should go hunting with only mouth call(s) in their pockets. Haven't gone that far myself, though.

The purr with a decent amount of up/down inflection was what probably took me the most work.

But.......oddly........a good, realistic, cluck that pops like a real hen is the call that took me the longest to be happy with.

I'm going to say "I think I'm pretty ok with all but the Cackle". Once I figured out the purr (it took someone on a forum to explain it in words that made sense to me) I was using that and scratching most of the time. I say I think because I haven't had anyone to experiment on and tell me what I sound like, maybe I'm bad at all of them LOL.

All I can really do is just the basic stuff nothing fancy and for purring I just use my slate call.

In my 20+ years of turkey calling I have never been able to make a mouth call work.
