Re-patterning(phot)

So there was a break in the weather today and I took the gun back outside. Decided just to shoot some 2 3/4" loads from using both the undertaker and x-full choke, and printed out some turkey targets. This is what I got at 20 and 30 yards. The 30 yard shot with the undertaker was with a Fed #6 turkey shell:

The left top and bottom were the undertaker shots, the right side top and bottom were the x-full shots.

I'd say the undertaker shot better, but marginally. The wind was picking up but I waited to shoot till it calmed down.

So what can you tell me from the photos? Is it the loads I'm using? Is it the choke? The sights?

Obviously my shot is still hitting high. Someone told me try tightening the screw down (the one you loosen to remove the barrel) and I did tighten that up and if it helped, it helped marginally.

I think it's the sights, I don't know, but I know after shooting the 2 3/4" shells, when I put the 3" shell in, whoa, those things can kick,lol

Yeah, the 2 3/4 shells were #7 small game shot, and the 30 yard shot with the Undertaker was with a Fed #6 turkey load

man you are getting an early start on that.. wish i could help you out a little more. try a comp n choke i think u are shooting a mossberg and i know its a litlle expensive but def worth it.

Ruth..shoot what you will be hunting with..federal 3" #5 shot..then show us the pattern..and Id stick with the undertaker tube from what Im seeing..just aim low and yuo'll do fine...yup , 3" packs a punch..but you wont feel it when you shoot at a Turkey

Oh ya..bury the front sight deeper into the back sight..that will bring you down some too

Yeah, I think I'm gonna stick with the Undertaker...I just need to get the sights set....I think though I'm going to get a set of TruGlo sights and a box of Winchester shells also.

Just need that pattern about 2 inches lower and it'll be on the money.

Wal mart here carries some tru glo sights. Put the universal extreme sights on my wife's 870, seems to be plenty of adjustment with them on her gun.

Agreed, patterning with shells that you aren't going to be hunting with doesn't make much sense to me. Shoot the shells you will be hunting with this spring and see what they do...

Agree too. Last year I checked my turkey gun with the shells I shot the previous year and it was still dead on. Tried another brand of the same size shot and they hit high and to the left a bit...similar to your upper left target. Rechecked zero with the old shells and sure enough it was still dead on. Different turkey loads can do that even just a manufacturer change in shells.

I also like the performance of the undertaker choke better too. It looks like it has a pattern that is more uniform than the other choke to me.

Turkeygirl try this if you get a chance.
Get a piece of cardboard or wrapping paper and draw several dots about the size of a quarter on it about 8" apart.
Get some lowbrass 2 3\4" shells and set up 10yds away from the target. Set up like your hunting. Fist dry fire a few times to get the feel for your trigger and what the sights will look like. I know you already know but they should be in a line ( ) kinda like that. Cover the dot with front sight and squeeze the trigger making sure the sight never moves. After you have done this a time or two put a shell in you gun and repeat the process. ( its best if you have someone else load or maybe load you gun for you that way you will concentrate on squeezing the trigger and not flinching in front of everyone). At this distance you should pulverize the dot on the target. Shoot 3 or 4 dots and see where you pattern is hitting, if it is off you will need to move you sights. Once you feel comfortable doing this put up single target and shoot one of your turkey loads at 20yds you should be on target, if so shoot one at 30yds.

See if this helps any if nothing else it will get you used to you trigger and new gun.

This is how I sight in my turkey gun each year. Ill shoot a couple of lowbrass shells to make sure I'm still on target, then a 3" FED Flight Control #5 at 35yds. If it hits true then comes the 1 NITRO (to much $$$ to shoot up on paper)

I think better sights will help alot. Just looks like your not level down the barrel causeing you to shoot high. As for the chokes, it looks like the undertaker is a bit more centered.

Yeah, I was looking down my barrel today...and with the sights that came on it...I feel like I'm not having my head down on the stock as much as I did on my other gun...morel ike I'm looking higher up to line up the sights....

nice patterns! it looks like you point of impact is a tad high, and at the longer shots the tight pattern produced buy your choke is throwing a good amount of your pattern above the target, the best way to check this is rest your gun when shooting and shoot at a LARGE piece of papper . try this out at 20 yards and use dove loads so you dont beat up your shoulder and wallet.
