Default browning or remington? help please1

hi there, new to posting on this forum but have been reading for a long time. i had a question for you knowledgable people. i am going to get a new shotgun for this turkey season. now it will be strictly for turkey, cause i already have a benelli that i use for other game. anyhow it is between a remington 1187 sps-t with the 21" barrel, or the browning bps nwtf 10 gauge, which i am really leaning towards. but what would be yous opinions on these two shotguns and why? thanks.

If you can find the BPS in 3 1/2" 12ga get that one. Even better is a Browning Gold, Silver or Winchester SX3. The 10ga is a great gun, and I do dearly love the BPS, don't get me wrong but if you are specifically buying a gun for Turkeys, a 10ga is not the best option. Your shell choices are limited and so are your choke choices with the 10ga. I shot a 10 for years until I got frustrated with the choke and ammo availability. Bottom line guys with 3 1/2" 12ga guns could whop my tail at the pattern board every day of the week and there was nothing I could do to change that.

Also recoil wise the 10ga BPS will rip your head off. The 1187 is a much softer shooting gun. But I kid you not, the Browning and Winchester autos will routinely out pattern the 1187.

IMHO, Remingtons best patterning turkey gun is the 870. With the right tweaking they can absolutely compete with the Brownings and Winchesters. With the 870 you will pay the price in recoil. Maybe some one has one but personally I've never seen an awesome patterning 1187. I don't know why. In 3 1/2" 12ga the BPS is an abuser too, so I suggest a limbsaver or hi viz pad and a mercury recoil reducer.

The 1187 is hard to beat. I personally have used a Rem SP10 for 21 years and rely on custom ammo for a great pattern. Plus, in my old age, the SP10 is too dang heavy to tote.

My vote is for the 1187

I have both guns. I had the Browning BPS 10 ga. first and it does the job on turkeys and on the shoulder when patterning. I never took in consideration the weight of the gun when carrying it for miles searching for turkeys. I bought the 11-87 for deer season and ended up buying a seperate barrel for turkey and a real tight choke and the pattern is unbelievable. It is lighter than the BPS and ever since I bought the 11-87 I have never taken out the BPS again. It just sits in the safe.

i used to shoot a BPS and loved it till i got a SBE, id go browning but on the 10 ga. side of it id lay off, the modern day 3.5s shoot to fast and to hard to get a 10ga thats as a gun is prob heavier.

Mossberg makes the best turkey guns but for an all around gun, nothing is better than Remington in MY opinion.

I shoot a benelli now and this will be my first year hunting turkeys with it,heck I just shot it for the first time today and loved it.I had a ten guage up until this year and the only reason I got rid of it was the choice of shells is not very good. They were hard to find and when I did find them, they were not what I was looking for.As for ten guage chokes,KICKS GOBBLIN THUNDER is what I had in mine and that is the only one you will need to try because it is awsome.

The BPS10 is a monster. I mean that in a couple ways. They kick like a freakin' freight train!! They also pattern like nothing else I've ever shot. Choke tubes are no problem. Many manufacturers make them. Mine wears a XXX-Full Comp-N-Choke tube. I shoot 2 oz. Winchester Supreme #6's out of it and it will out-pattern my Super X2 (with the same exact payload) by several percentage points. I can count on an average of 60 hits solidly in the head & neck of a turkey target at 45 yards with my 10. That being said.........I've been using my SX2 exclusively since 2002.

As for the 11-87..........I wouldn't even consider one unless Remington's addressed the deal where you need to change O-rings to shoot different shells. If they have fixed that, then I might look..........if the Super X2 (and Super X3) didn'y exist.

Welcome to the forums. Some good advice given in some of the above replies. Turkey hunt with a winchester 1300 here, have read good things about the winchester sx3, would not rule it out.

Can't beat the Remington 870 Express...it will do everything you ask it too...maybe even scramble the eggs if you asked nicely enough

    Welcome on! Take care,

What's wrong with just using the Benelli?
