    Question mossburg 835 shot pattern???

    I' was out patterning my new 835 and it seems to be inconsistent. I tried 3 differant shells, Federal, Win, supreme, and Win. super X, all 3", 1.75 oz shot. These are the results:

    Federal 30 yrds 20 hits in kill zone
    Win. Supreme 30 yrds 13 hits in kill zone
    Win. Super X 30 yrds 12 hits in kill zone

    Keep in mind this s a 12 ga with factory choke. Are these bad results or normal because I wont dare shoot over 30yrds with this gun. My 870 Remington puts 30 - 35 hits in kill zone at 30 yrds with the same shells. Any input or help is greatly appreciated.

    Not terrible with factory choke, you did fail to mention what size shot you were using. If it's 6's it's bad, 4's not so bad, remember that after market tubes would be available if they weren't needed. Good luck, I myself like the comp-n-choke, but most turkey choke tubes will do well.

    The Federal and Win. supreme are No. 5 and the Win. super X is No. 4. I don't have any more time to pattern so should i buy a box of No. 6 and use it? Also should I consider the 3.5" shells?

    comp n chokes are awesome, just make sure you get the right constriction tube for what size shot you'll be using.

    Yep me too! I have the C-N-C XXX full for my 835. At 40 yards, the last time I shot it. I had 49 head and neck killing hits. I tried four different tubes, and six different brands of ammo. My gun likes the Winchester Supremes 3.5" #6.

    I have patterned the following shells in both the included Mossberg XXFull choke and an HS Undertaker HS choke in my 835:
    * Winchester XTended Range 3inch #5s
    * Winchester XTended Range 3inch #6s
    * Remington's new heavier-than-lead/tungsten heavyshot #5s

    The Win XT #5s performed better for me than the other shells in both chokes. The best setup, by far, was the XT #5s in the HS Undertaker HS choke. That combo is putting way north of 100 pellets into a 10inch cirlce at 35 yards.

    YMMV of course, but I'd strongly recommend trying a few other combos and an aftermarket choke or two (HS, CompNChoke, whatever). You can probably find an optimum load+choke combo that blows your factory choke away.

    BTW, I have hunted with the factory choke and killed my first bird this year using it at 17 steps. But its performance with my preferred Win XT #5s falls off quickly starting around 30 yards. Longer distance, say 30-45 yards, the HS Undertaker HS really shines.

    This proves that even though we all own the same gun, each gun is different and needs to be patterned! Now that you have the info listed here, its up to you to find out what your gun likes! If you have some friends or family that is shooting the same gun. Ask them to borrow their chokes for you to test. Also, ask them if you can buy some of their ammo for this test. This will help you narrow down what choke will work in your gun. It will also help save you some money in the process too! Good luck!

    I replaced my 835's OEM choke with a Undertaker and have not look back since.
