It didn't come easy but hubby and I finished our single year slam this past weekend in northwest Nebraska. It was probably the most beautiful place I have ever been.
I don't know what we did to piss mother nature off but this is what we faced most of 4 days we were there.
Yes, that's snow.We had everything from thunderstorms to sleet to snow, lows in mid 20's-low 30's, highs in 30's-40's and 20-30mph winds.
Not best conditions for this thin Florida blood. But we didn't let it beat us. The buddy that went with us got his bird on Thursday. 9 1/2" beard, 3/4" spurs, 21 lbs.
Friday morning dawned with 20+ winds, 30 degrees and scattered snow. We got set up and even with these conditions the birds were rumbling in the trees. But once they flew down they shut down. Had 2 strutters come by but they were henned up heavy and we couldn't get them in range. Finally this guy came by about 35 yards and BANG....Merriam Down ! ! SLAM ! ! ! !
And, yes that is snow. 8 1/4"beard, 20 1/2 lbs, 3/4" spurs.
Saturday morning dawned to mid 20's, 20+mph winds and by 7:00 it was snowing, again.Hubby wouldn't give in though. He toughed it out and it paid off big time. He downed the smaller bird about 7:30. SLAM ! ! !
9 1/2" beard, 20 1/2 lbs, 1" spurs. He had another bird gobbling to him so he stayed put and finally got that bird worked in. 10" beard, 22 lbs, 1 1/4 spurs.
Had a couple of hours to hunt Sunday morning so I decided to try for a second bird. Weather was a little better. Temp was mid 20's, light wind but did have 1"-2" snow on ground. Once again birds were rumbling in trees. They gobbled a little after they flew down. Got 5 different strutters to come by but closest only came to about 100 yards. It was a beautiful site watching them strutting in the snow. Turkey hunting in the snow was definitely a first and hopefully a last.
Our season's over now and time to recoup, do a little fishing and start getting ready for deer season.
