I shoot a 12, but with a good choke/shell combo and getting the bird into a good distance a 20 guage is plenty.
With the proper shot and distance...a 20 ga. will easily kill a turkey. Sounds to me that your spring bird was either too far for your pattern or you pulled your shot a little. I personally won't use anything smaller than a 12 ga. but a 20 will work!![]()
I use a 12 gauge but my son's 20 gauge has the better pattern up to a certain yardage. Both have killed turkeys.
The first few birds I shot I used a 20, but they were about 15 yards away and they didn't go anywhere after the shot. I now use a 12, but wouldn't be afraid to take a 20 with me![]()
You need to pattern your gun, with a full choke or better yet an extra full turkey choke! Then you need to find out you fartherest distance you can shoot from! With a 20 gage, I would think 30 yards might be max! But you will never know until you shoot a few different shells through the gun with turkey choke!
Also not every gun shoots the same so try different brands of ammo, I.E. Federal, Winchester, and Remington. There are also a lot of different chokes to choose from, if you have anybody that will let you borrow one to try that would be great!
