In my opinion dekes don't really matter too much. I usually use them, but they don't seem to make a difference. I use up to 3 dekes at a time. (2 hens, and 1 jake). As for calls, my favorite is a H.S. Strut Lil Deuce II. But theres tons of excellent ones out there.

depending on the time to hunt i usually won't use the jake and hen decoys till the later part of the season. usually inthe first part of the turkey season the toms are kind of greedy and will usually come in pretty well where i hunt. the latter when it is time foe them to kind of shut down i used the hen and someitmes a jake to help mure them in and i will use them if i am in an area and they are hanging up but usually i get more than my share of toms coming in as well as big jakes

1 or 2 hens and 1 jake is the setup I use. As for the calls...find the ones you like the best and what you think sounds the best. You can call in a turkey with just about any call on the market, you just have to find the ones you can use the best.

Depending on what time of the day and hunt it is!

If it is early April! The birds are really henned up! I like to use a couple Hens along with a jake! If a Big Goobbler is in the area, he will not let that jake touch them Hens!

Also around NOON I will use a Hen only! Cause If a gobbler is in the area! He will come RUNNING! Cause most hens are bedded down around noon to about 3 clock! Just depends!

I suggest you read the Realtree Mag alot! Lots of GREAT info in there! You will learn from it! Promise!

For me it all depends on the situation. If the tom is already really close I will find a place to sit and call. If I am setting up on a roosted bird I will set out 2 hens and mock a fly down. And if I locate a far off gobbler or just find a good place late in the day I will use 2 hens and a jake or strutting jake if possible.
As for the calls what ever call you can use effectively without moving alot, I think is always best. I personally use mouth calls (diaphrams).
What ever call you use practice, practice, practice!!!!!

Usually use no dekes at all. More of a P.I.A. than anything else, IMO. But that's just me.

For morning hunts I use to use 2 hens and a jake and it worked well (also this is the the strutt is in full swing) but now I usualy use just one hen all the time if they are henned up amd cant get them in come back latter and cut them off if you know their rout.

Technically I have 2 decoys but the one is to replace the other because it is so old and beat up,lol. So I use 1 hen decoy but I have yet to get a gobbler in the spring with a decoy out. I did get a jake in the fall season with my decoy out, the only time. I think it is 50/50 with decoys, you don't need them to be successful but they are a visual help with a gobbler and keep their focus on the decoy and not you! I like the Ol' Yeller Slatek call by Knight & Hale, really easy to use, and I have various mouth calls. I'm waiting for a Quaker Boy Quad Threat Slate Call, if it ever comes in the mail!
