Just posted this on another thread, here it is again.

I used a Cabela's plaque and kit for about 30-40 bucks.

Dry them well with salt and remove all the meat you can from the tail. Spread the tail out on a board and keep it spread with staples or nails holding it from closing. Go cut a piece of a round log about 1" thick. I like Cherry or a good hardwood. The stain looks better in the grain. Cut it in half and then use a sawzall to cut a slot in the half. Kind of like making a napkin holder. Once you get it deep enough to hide the ugly part of the tail, stain it, paint it or finish it however you want. I used hot glue to fasten the tail fan to the bottom after it is dry. I then drill a small hole in the bottom, 1/2" usually is good enough to glue the beard base into. You can also take the shell you used to harvest that bird, glue it to the plaque and glue a leg inside the shell. Set the foot anyway you want before it dries.
The lone tail is my son Joe's tom that I mounted for him.
The 2 tail pic is of store bought plaques that I customized a bit by putting a pic on it and gluing the shell and leg to it.
Another good thing to use the tail fan for is for the Primos B- mobile Tom decoy. It looks soo real that you should carry the deke in a bag so you don't get shot. I think it looks way better than the silk one that is provided. The tail behind the skull mount is the one I use for B Mobile.
