that's the setup I use... I'll have to check and see what load I'm using and get back with you. I'll try to do so tonight if I remember. I know I've tried 4s, 5s, and 6s and I believe I'm using #5s right now... there's a little pattern difference between the three but they all shoot well out of my gun. Have killed 9 birds with the 1187.![]()
Loads and choke combos will vary per gun, even of the same type. My 1187 12ga w/28" barrel ended up liking #6 Remington Premier 3" copper plated mags w/ patternmaster providing the best killing pattern. Same brand in #5's were a close second. I tried 4 chokes to get the best pattern, luckily they were also from my other 870's, so it wasn't as expensive as it could have been. Try to spread the cost of shells between some friends...Good luck this season, Eric

Like Eric said, loads and choke combos will vary even with the same type gun or even when putting in a new choke. Up until last year I turkey hunted with an 1187 for years. Can't remember how old that one is but it was one of the 1st shotguns available with camo pattern (MO Bottomland).
When I bought my 1st Rhino 660 choke for my 1187 it performed best with Remington Premier 3" mag. #5 copper plated shot. When they came out with Hevi-Shot it also like #5 Hevi-Shot too. After some 8 or so years using that choke (lost track of time) I decided to put a new Rhino 660 choke in it. Low and behold the same shells patterned poorly with the same type choke only it was new. It ended up liking Remington Premier 3" #6 shot or the Duplex 4x6 shells a whole lot better than the #5's. It liked 3" Nitro 4x5x7 Hevi-Shot the best though. It never would pattern worth a flip, with either choke using any Winchester shells. I sure spent a lot a $ trying different Winchester loads too. Other hunters in the forum will swear by Winchester shells though so you can't just rule them out.
I upgraded to a Benelli SBEII (in RT APG HD camo) last year but my 1187 still goes in the truck in case I need a backup. Both are topped with Bushnell Holosights.
I use a 11-87 and have for years.
#4 Winchester Supremes 3 in
Hastings .665 extended choke tube. far cheaper than the others.
