Default South Dakota turkey huntin' buddy needed

    HI:

Love to hunt turkeys here in Iowa and have decided to try South Dakota this year (inspired by the other thread in this forum). I hunt Wyoming every year for deer and can not believe the amount of birds out there. Anyway, I am looking to hunt the Blackhills of SD this spring and it's always more fun with another hunter (otherwise I will do it on my own).

I usually archery hunt, however if the time is limited I will take the gun on this hunt. Looking at a long weekend or even a week time period. I may also be intersted in Montana at the same time. I see app. period for licenses in SD. is Feb 20th.

If interested then let me know.

    Good luck to all

Well, you picked the perfect state to hunt Merriams and also find Easterns and Rios as well. The majority of the birds are Merriams (especially all the birds in the Black Hills and West River, but you can still find them East River as well), but Rios can be found in the central portion of the state (though mostly on the East River side) and Easterns inhabit the north central and northeastern parts of the state. I'll be hunting in the hills (WY/SD) in late April with a couple guys, but maybe we could rondevue at some point. Don't worry about not drawing a tag because they are guaranteed. I'd hunt the Hot Springs and Custer areas in the southern part of the hills. Finding birds shouldn't be too much of a problem. Over 80% of the Black Hills is National Forest and public land, so you won't have a problem finding land to hunt on. We'll be hunting down there as well as around the Sundance area on the WY side. Good luck!

I'd love to do this hunt with you but don't think I could make it this year... however, I'm thinking about planning a similar hunt next year... SD, Wy, and or Montana.. will most likely try to hunt at least 2 out of the three states..

I think you'll find that Steve Beilgard is right when he says you can harvest a bird in MT, WY and SD all in the same day!

    gobblergane:

I thought about eastern SD, however, when getting on the SD website there are pratically NO NON-RESIDENT LICENSES available for those areas. Thanks for the advice on where to hunt. I did see that CUSTER state park is residents only.

    good luck to all

Well, I would recommend the Black Hills. There is not only CSP but the town of Custer as well close by. Hot Springs is within 15 miles of CSP and I believe 25-30 miles of Custer. There are a LOT of birds in the Hills. I'd apply for there.

Also the Hill City area is good too.
