I'm thinking about using my 20 ga for turkey this year, has anyone used one? And how did it work for you?

I'm somewhat new to turkey hunting, but I have taken a few. Until this coming season I was using a 20 gauge Mossberg 500 with a full choke and Remington Wingmaster HD turkey #4 - 3" shells. Basically with what I've heard and based on what experience I have, a 20 gauge for turkey will give you a 30-35 yard range assuming you shoot straight. I never did really pattern my gun or try a longer shot to prove a range any longer.

I can tell you that I've not hunted with one, yet. However, I patterened my Winchester 1400 MKii with extra full Briley choke and #6 shot, 2 3/4", and its a dead trukey to at least 30 yards. I didn't have time to test it farther but I'd start to worry about penetrating power after that.

My sons used one each this weekend, I would definately use a full or xfull choke....our bird went down hard at 35 yards with only a full choke........we used Winchester Supremes #6 shot.....very good shell. al

20 ga will knock em down, thats the only shotgun my grandfather used (JC Higgins). I still have this old gun and am going to test it this year.
The .20ga is more than adequate for knocking down a turkey.
Just know where the gun patterns and use a good quality shell, like a Winchester Supreme or a Federal turkey load in 3" for the maximum amount of pellets to head their way.
Get a full of a choke as you can and KNOW how your gun patterns!
Good Luck.

Thanks for the feedback everyone,I'm going to set mine up this weekend.
My kids use a Stoger ou in 20ga, I have Undertaker chokes in both barrels and we all have harvested toms with it . 3" 1 1/4oz # 6 shot , does wonders on any bird within 35yds!! I allways shoot #6 in my guns (12 or 20) for more pellets in the head at the shot!
i have a remington 20ga. that my dad had dipped in mossy oak break-up. I love it !! I even know some people who use .410ga for turkey, so it's whatever you prefer !

It's the only gun I've shot, Mossberg 500 20 ga. I got a 500 20 ga Super Bantam last spring, put a red dot on it...looking forward to my second season with it. Just as deadly as a 12 ga in my opinion...
