Wisconsin Turkey opener today here....we hit the daily double!!
We got out and set up and had birds working our set right off..only thing it was just hens..we came in about 10:30 and went for a drive to locate birds in the area..we headed out for an area that is swamp. Located a huge gobbler strutting on a service road along State DNR land. Was able to get in on the bird and got right on top of him in thick cedar. He was 24.5# and over 1" spurs with a 10" beard. We then went and registered that bird, and headed back home to get set up for the afternoon hunt. We saw a couple hens..and about 5 pm Kim was ready to head in because her feet were geting cold, so I cranked up Mr. Heater. At 5:15 along comes three huge toms strutting right around the corner of my plot heading to "pretty Boy".. they were not wasting time and looked pretty angry...the waddels were as DEEP RED as could be...another gobbler was on their turf and they were ready to rumble!! What a sight!!...I told Kim to get her gun up and take the first tom she could get a bead on..BOOM!..and there were feathers flying and one bird flys off the plot. The one she hit didnt make it off, and the third one landed by the hit bird and proceeded to knock the stuffing out of it!! Then he came right over in front of us and wanted to have a little pretty boy too...it was a heck of a show!! And it happened so fast you just react.Kim's bird was 21.5# 3/4 " spurs and a 9.5" beard. It was as Roger Raglin would say...and both of us can also say..."I had a pretty good day."!!My local Taxidermist will be doing a fan/beard/and spur mount of both birds with our photo in a frame..I must say this..today as we finished our am devotions, we asked the Lord to bless us with two nice gobblers before heading out...I'd say He Done Good!
Here are the spurs from my Swamp chicken
