Who uses a Red Dot scope on there Turkey Gun?

Man That thing is awesome!
I bought a el-cheapo BSA Red Dot from Walmarts last year ($29).
Actually I wanted to try it on my bow but the dang mounting brackets are about $100! Beleieve me I looked and looked and thats about the cheapest I could find.
Not for a $29 scope. Not me -no way.

So I figured I'd slap it on the old 870 pump and set me up a turkey gun.
I used it for the 1st time hunting with Josh (vtbowhunter) and scored 2 jakes in 2 hours on 2 different morning in a row.
Both shots were over 30 yards. One was barely over 30 but the bird was spooked by a previous bow shot, and 2nd morning was the same but running straight away from me at about 35 to 40 yards.
He an I were hunting out of his Double Bull and he got 1st dibs with his bow and I was the follow up shot.
Worked out real well for me... LOL
He can report his side if he wants..... LMAO!

Anyways if your kinda thinking about it and not sure. Let me tell ya, they work and work very well! I love mine!

The one I have has no magnification, which I feel is better for getting on moving targets. With the 30mm scope it has plenty of field of view on target and just a tiny red dot needs to be put on what you want to shoot. Plus the dot has 11 power setting to dim or brighten it as you like.

I like the red dot so much I was thinking of getting a rifle scope, with mag, and try it out. I like it better then cross hairs. JMO
Seems easier for the eye and brain to see where the bullet is suppose to go vs the cross hairs. Again, JMO.

I tried one last year and have got to say, i'm going to have to go against the grain here!

I didnt like the reddot (BSA) b/c it didnt allow me to pick up small sticks and saplings that were b/t me and the bird. I switched back to the adjustable fiber optics and i believe thats where i'll stay. I did sight my gun in w/ the fiber optics like i did the scope and starting close w/ 2 3/4" is where it's at!

Dislikes about Reddots:
1. the before mentioned sight limitation
2. remembering to turn on the dot when working a bird ( i forget to take off my safety sometimes, dont need something else to forget)
3. batteries. . . better keep one of those in your vest.
4. Dot settings- you have to set the brightness for the conditions, first light calls for a dim setting or you'll have a blur, bright lighting calls for a bright setting or you cant see the dot at all. Each condition is different, so . . . if i do remember to cut on the dot or better yet dont remember until the last second, i dont want to be playing any mini mieni moe on the dot settings.

These are the reasons i switched back to the fiber optics, not saying reddots are no good, just that people have different preferences.

I use a Bushnell Holosight. I don't have the problem with it that Covehnter had with the sticks and saplings with a red dot but you have to adjust it to a low setting during the 1st 30 minutes or so of daylight and then increase the power on up for the rest of the day. Batteries last longer than our 6 week turkey season and it has an automatic shut off after being on 8 hours if you forget to turn it off. I do keep a spare set of batteries in my turkey vest just in case they go dead but never had to change them out if I started the season with new batteries.

I use the 30mm BSA on two of my guns and soon to be a third. They're kinda like a microwave and a cell phone. I don't know what I ever did without them.

The only thing I don't care for is the cheap little lenscaps they come with. I solved that real quick with a pair of Butler Creek caps.

I've not had any trouble with not seeing obstructing limbs. I do turn on the dot and set the brightness any time I feel a bird could be appearing. I always set it at the lowest useable setting and then work it up as needed. It requires very little movement and I have adjusted the dot while a bird has been in sight. I always install a fresh battery before season and carry a spare. A battery change takes all of 30 seconds in the field if you do it slow. So far, I have had no issues with the $29 sight holding up to 3 1/2" 12 ga. recoil or field use / abuse. I am quite happy with the results, so far.

I have to say no also. I still use the little red dot on the end of my Benelli barrel.I put it over his eye and KABOOM!!!!! So far so good from 30 to 60 yrds.

That's some pretty fine sightin' from a bead sight. A typical front bead on a shotgun covers around 14" at 60 yards.

OK, the first shot with the bow was at a bird the was strutting straight at us and the arrow passed through the feathers between the body and wing, and the second shot was a clean miss......bird was 30 yards and I shot for 23....oops.

I can slam the heck out of deer but these birds get me all messed up, lol......Even the greatest bowhunter alive isn't going to perfect all the time.

I have to agree with the Aimpoint Red Dot sight as well, even though I use a scope on my gun. If I were ever to get one, the Aimpoint is the best of the bunch, quality wise. Now, about that BSA Red Dot sight, I seen first hand two season ago, it's internals fall apart on my buddies 11-87 after only 6-7 shots. After witnessing that first hand, and I don't mean to put anybody down for using them, but I do have to say they are, in my opinion, very cheaply made.

I can't argue that. $29 optics are just that.............$29 optics. But, that being said.........the one on my wife's 870 is going into its 5th year. The one on my SX2, its 4th. And I will add that turkey guns around this house get the living crap shot out of them. Both BSA sights have sat atop a couple hundred 3" and 3 1/2" magnum turkey loads. So far...........so good. Actually, if they both fell apart tomorrow, I've more than gotten my $29 out of both of 'em. And, just as a precaution, they're both on a B-Square saddlemount, so I can look under and use the beads on the barrel if need be.
