Default Choke Tube Question ( Lead Only)

I have two choke tubes for my 870 - 12 gauge

    Rem super full
    HS undertaker

Heres my question. Both Chokes state "lead only". I was thinking of patterning Hevishot this year but was concerned if this would be acceptable. I'm not sure what the Hevishot consists of(bismuth, lead, steel, ) ???? What are the dangers of shooting anything other than lead.

    Thanks in advance.

you need to make sure the choke is rated for Hevi-shot before using them for heavy shot. I have never shot hevi-shot but have heard of people blowing the choke of the barrel and causing "cosmetic" damage to the inside of the choke. I know the new rem chokes make in the last year or so can handle the hevi-shot. Just need to make sure the one you have can.

    Thanks Todd,

My Rem choke is probably three years old. I'm guessing its not rated for the Hevishot. Maybe I better stick with the lead. As much as I like doctors I hate hospitals. Thanks for info.

The Heavy Shot choke tubes have less restriction.
You should not shoot Heavy Shot through a tube that is not made for it, bad things could happen!!!!!

I've been shooting Hevi-Shot thru a regular Undertaker for several years with no problems, and no barrel or choke tube scratching/scarring. The shot stays in the shot cup until it's completely thru the tube and exits the barrel, so any marks would be from the cup wouldn't it, since the shot itself never contacts the barrel wall or choke tube? I'm confused about the constriction issue also. For example, I shoot a 12 ga. 870. My Undertaker has a constriction of .665, which is exactly the same, for example, as the Primos Jellyhead, which is designed for Hevi-Shot. So if they are the same constriction, what's the difference? The material the choke tube is made of? Porting? The Jellyhead is a ported tube. I notice that the Undertaker HS (for Hevi-Shot) is slightly more open that the regular Undertaker (for a 12 ga. Remington) at .675, vs. 665 for the "lead-only" model.

I know there must be some reason as to why the tube is marked "lead-only", but I can't figure out why constriction would be that reason, since many tubes supposedly designed specifically for Hevi-Shot have the same constriction, or are even tighter? I've had my Undertaker since before Hevi-Shot even came out, and I wonder if the "lead-only" marking has more to do with not using steel shot thru that tube, rather than Hevi-Shot? And I have seen quite a few posts on several forums from hunters who, like me, have used Hevi-Shot thru a standard Undertaker with no problems.

    I'm more confused than ever!
