Woodchucks--- funny story from Friday

On Friday I went for a walk looking for shed antlers wearing a t shirt and jeans. No camo whatsoever. As I was crossing an old matenience(sp?) road, I see a big fat brown blob move out of the corner of my eye. I stop. And start walking up the road, but keeping my eyes on the movement. There was a woodchuck just standing there on top of a rock. You know what I'm talking about, the kind of stand and stare thing the prairie dogs do. They just sit there with their teeth out and hands hanging, just staring off into space. I have been told that these things have excellent eyesight, but for some reason, I was able to walk right by it without camo.

Ok, so I go home get dressed into my camo grab my pellet gun with some pellets and I'm off. When I arrive to the area where I saw the woodchuck about 20 minutes ago, he runs across the ground and stops. I sit down on the ground, rest the crosshairs on his head, take a deep breath and squeeze the trigger real slowly... I shoot, the pellet goes low, I completely missed the woodchuck. I checked the spot for blood, but nothing. It turns out that after I shot and missed, he ducked into his hole that was right in front of him. Slick little fugger. So I set up about 10 yards away from his hole and wait. In about 5 minutes, he pops out of another hole, but he is still in front of me. Again, I go through the same routine and miss again! He ducked into his hole once again. Then another 5 minutes pass, but then I noticed it was getting late and almost dinner time. I go to stand up and start moving when the woodchuck's head pops up out of his hole takes one look at me and goes back down. I could do nothing but laugh. It all happened so quickly. lol...

The problem I faced was that the shot kept going low and the pellet and crosshairs had no time to level out while in the air. At 1,000 fps and 10 yards, the pellet gets there extremely quick.

yup, a .22 or .22 Mag would do the trick! i did the same thing with a groundhog, (not sure if they are the same thing as a woodchuck) i was out plinking with the pellet gun, came across a groundhog, but couldnt hit him for the life of me. so i ran back home, got the .22 Magnum, went back laid the crosshairs between his eyes and BANG, that was the end of Mr. Groundhog, good luck duckin for a .22 Mag!

I guess if you placed a pellet in the heart, lungs it would kill the chuck, but in my experience, they're tough little buggers. I'd go with a .22 or .22 mag. There's a bit more kinetic energy in those bullets than the pellets.

I am in suburbia, so a rifle is out of the question. I am going to go back with the bow.

I've whacked a couple of woodchucks over the years that have taken up residence under my shed with my Sheridan pellet rifle. Got 1 shot kills by shooting for the head,,,, distance was 15 yards.
