    Default City fit Bird Dogs

I live in a small house with 6 other people with a small (18 yds by 15 yds) yard and am getting into bird hunting. I would like to get a dog but I think the house is too small. Any suggestions on breeds that do not need much space but hunt birds very effectively?

Brittany, or maybe a field bred Cocker comes to mind.

Cocker's are all mostly show or house material now days, but I'll bet there's still a few field breeders out there.

Poodles were actually bird dogs originally too I believe.

I don't agree with labs. I have had them for many years, and they need room to run. I have one right now. I love the labs, but it doesn't sound like that would be the best choice for you. Only my opinion

    Waterfowl or Field?

Waterfowl...I'd look into a Nova Scotia Duck Toller
    Field...Brittany

I would diffenetly say lab, but I have 2 of them (Black male & yellow female) and they need there room to run. I really don't know what kind of breed to tell you because all i've ever had were labs. If you plan on excersing the dog and running it and swimming it every day or two, you might be able to try a lab. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I dont think this is much of a question of dog, but more a question of you.

How much hunting are you going to do a season, and how willing are you to go and run this dog on a daily bases.

You say your "just getting started in bird hunting" if you arnt going to hunt more than 2/3 days a week i dont think a dog is worth youur money.

If you arnt willing to get the dog to the local park everyday for a good hard run, the dog wont be worth much during the season.

That said I had Springer Spaniels when we lived in town, my uncle had one at college as well, Lab would be another good choice. Just give them a commitment and they will repay you many times over.

we got a springer. He LOVES to run, and has tons of energy. But he has a very little yard, and doesn't getta run much except on the weekends. If you can get your dog out runnin every few days, a springer would be fine. They aren't too big.

For some reason I'm thinkin a lab wouldn't be very good. It jus seems like a 100 lb+ dog wouldn't be the right choice for a small house/yard. Just my opinion.
