    Default Dog Training Question

I have a black lab puppy that I'm trying to train to hunt long tails. I got some wings from a friend over the weekend and the dog has gone nuts over them every time I pull the bag out. My question is what do all of you put wings in to train your dogs? I was trying to find some sort of bag that she could find and retrieve that she couldn't chew through. Any ideas?

    to hunt long tails.
    i'm assuming you mean trails!

There are a lot of over the counter scents for a variety of different animals--you can try one of those. When introducing a lab pup to feathers for retrieving I just tie a few around a training bumper with a plastic hose clamp/tie.

i think he meant long tails, as in roosters

heck the natural scent of the wing is enough

    Default Wing on a string

If it is a young pup and your wanting him to point use the wing and string method.

    How old is your pup?

I feel it is important to get them started young, get them excitied about it. A wing is a great tool for training. Grab the wing and drag it on the floor. Get them pumped up about it! I will take the wing and make them stay and hide it in some grass so they can see it and then send them. In the end, experience is what will pay off and be the important tool for teaching them. Make sure you keep it a positive experience though!

With a good basic obedience layed out, getting them out hunting with other dogs I think is great. If you have a pheasant preserve where you can introduce them over live birds once they reach a certain age and are introduced to gun fire and such.
    Be thankful for today!

    Default Wings

Wing on a string, worked great for me actually a 6 and 1/2 foot fishing pole. I also hid some like others stated. I kept the pup on a check cord so I had some control. Right now though intrest is the key let the pup have one once in a while desire is a big part of the game.

She is now about 13 months old and is starting to progress along nicely. Hoping to get her out in the fields here soon to see how she will do with some live birds and a friends German Shorthair.
