Default Slayed 13 rabbits with 1 beagle hound.

It was very cold outside and din't get to take any pics. It was -4 when we were out hunting the skies were gray but the rabbits were out on the run. My father and myself killed the 13 rabbits in an hour and half. It was pure sweetness.

My dad even shot one on the move at 25 yards. Not bad for a old timer at 55 years old.

The dog as been on break since then. We brung him in our shed, turned on the heater and he fell fast asleep.

Sorry didn't get any pics. It was so cold and we just wanted to get them indoors. Couldn't find the digital camera anywhere.

Thats great except for one thing, Indiana bag limit is 5 rabbits per person per day, so you just admitted to breaking game laws on a public forum, not good if C.O. should look at it..Just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing. My first thought was "dang, what's the limit in Indiana?"

    It's 4 in Ohio.

Great shooting if it was legal.

I was wondering about the limit thing also. Unless you were somewhere that does allow that many.

You're lucky you didn't get caught, those extra 3 rabbits would have been expensive.

Sounds like a great time... I miss rabbit hunting with a couple beagles. That was a passion of mine growing up. I had 2 beagles named Porkchop and Tbone. Best rabbit dogs that ever lived
    Congratulations on your hunt!!!

we have a springer spaniel which is a good rabbit dog. Doesn't really take any training, just run 'em around in the woods a lot, and get 'em in the thick brush. When they smell a rabbit, it's the dogs natural instinct to look for it. You can get a rabbit dog for just about any price you want, some may be better than others though.

Most any hound dog will run a rabbit. I had an English Setter that was really good at finding bunnies and running them a short distance but did not circle them. (Nut has my old dog Jake now)

The most common type of hound used on bunnies are beagles, and yes, there are specific blood lines that have been bred to run bunnies. I've hunted over about 6 or 7 different beagles ranging from great (Hutch) to horrible (Rocky), and one or two in between (Taylor and Tanner). The first dog I ever hunted rabbits over was Hutch. That first day I saw Hutch run a rabbit down a railroad track out of sight, then out of ear shot. I looked around at the owner and my buddy Shawn, and I was thinking "you just lost your dog." so I said something like "hey, Hutch is running down the tracks, is he going to come back?" and Jimmy said "he'll turn him pretty soon." Sure enough, about 10 minutes later, I could again hear Hutch, then I could see him, and I could see my buddies getting ready for the shot, and 2 minutes later here came that rabbit. I don't remember who got it, but we did.

Tanner and Taylor were ok dogs. Taylor was a great dog, but incredibly slow. I remember waiting on one rabbit for 45 minutes once. I told my buddy Shawn he should have named Tanner "Arc" and he said "why?" And I said "because he runs rabbits in an arc, not a circle."

By far the worst beagle I hunted with was Rocky. Rocky came from a pet store, with show bloodlines and not field bloodlines. needless to say, he was terrible. He usually followed us rather than running out front looking for scent. He was a bit gun shy too.

If you're serious about running beagles for rabbits, I'd go online and search around for a good blood line. A good beagle can cost well over $300, but you can get decent runners for around $125. At least that's what they go for around here.

Good luck. Hunting bunnies with beagles is a lot of fun.
