The off-season is tough on the upland hunter seems like yesterday pheasants where flying all over the place.
This may work for any of your larger upland birds, IE. Ruffed, sage, and spruce grouse, and prairie chickens. It will not work on quail, as there legs just don’t cut it. I tried it on a young Jake a friend shot many years ago and it kind of worked, but for pheasants there is nothing easier


Here is a tip for the easiest field dressing you will ever do. Normally I just keep the breast on pheasants I’ve shot. I don’t think the legs have enough meat to warrant a tough gutting job. When you get back to the truck at the end of a successful hunt place the bird on the ground belly up between your feet. Spread the wings out and place each foot where the wings meet the body, make sure you got them pinned real tight. Know just grab both feet and pull back and up. The head and backbone should rip everything right out of the body cavity; clip both wings and your done.

Once you get used to this method it will take you about thirty seconds a bird, and you wont get any blood on you.



P.S. this method will also show you where you hit the bird as the vitals will come out still in place on the spinal cord allowing you to see if it was a heart shot,broken back,lungs,or wings.

I saw that in Field and Stream awhile back Aaron. I tried it on doves, and, well, I usually ended up with two legs in my hands. lol.

How are the flies coming?

So your telling me you have to keep heart, liver and wing them out???
I have no problem just breasting a bird out, What do you do with turkeys??? I've always heard the legs are tougher than a rock?

Thats what i do with grouse, but i keep the leg meat as well.

I do something similiar with grouse, almost the same as ducks. I pin them down also, and just stick a finger under the breast, and out it pops. It works for me

Ya i figured it would work for grouse the finger trick is what I do with quail.
