Default YB15\'s 2005 Hunting and Fishing Journal

    March 18th, 2005

Just starting this thing off. Weather has been bad considering it is spring break. I would like to go fishing but the wind is blowing hard, and I could through a line let alone launch a boat on the lake. Maybe the weekend will be better.

The weather was pretty nice for a change yesterday. The winds were calmer, and it was about 60ish, so I went to the deadwood pond and tried my luck. Never got a single bite, so I went and drove around on my 4-wheeler.

The hogs are still back in my food plot. It is so tore up and fresh with sign it is unreal. I haven't seen them thing since last year though. I am thinking of getting a friend of mine to help me set a trap so we can get them out of here. They are reaking havoc on my land.

Dad and I are fixing to burn the palce off today. We have to load up the sprayers, and get ready to fight fire all day. Sure makes a difference though. Help control the ticks and weeds alot better. Always looks real good after the first rain too all green and stuff.

My Journal is somewhat embarrassing lol. I haven't updated it in 4ever. It will remain sketchy at best til I start school since I no longer have the internet at home.

Just a quick update on things for ya. I got a new hunting bow. I traded the Spoiler for a Mathews Q2. It's a big step up from the old spoiler. I am currently tweaking the Q2 and getting it zeroed in. I should be ready for the Realtree Shoot in August. I am hoping to make a better show this year than I did last year.

I am also looking for some 3-D shoots nearby. Not having much luck though. Gas is so how I don't want to drive all over the state for a shoot.

Fishing is pretty good this year. I have already landed 2 8Lbers! I lost another monster at the bank. It snapped my 20Lb test line. I am selling the boat. The plan is to sell it and get a SeaDoo. I don't use the boat much, and I think a seadoo would be a blast.

I hope to keep this a bit more updated, but bare with me till August!

Went to the Okie Get Together today. MAn I had a great time seeing all my Realtree buds. Even got to meet a few new faces.

I shot the 3-d fairly well. Ending up finishing 3rd in the rangefinder class. I honestly felt I could have shot much better. I remember pulling 4 shots in a row. Also learned how to fletch arrows today, so I may be looking to buy a fletcher myself.

Jenn and I have been seeing deer like crazy. Seeing Fawns, Does, and even Bucks! This season looks to be tremendous. The deer are everywhere and for the first time in a while I am seeing godd buck numbers. Been averaging about 24-25 deer a night with the spotlight.

Seasons drawing nearer. I am getting more pumped. Just a matter of time before I'll be sitting in a stand somewhere. Can't wait!

Weather has turned hot and dry. I tried diskin today, but the 4wheeler disc couldn't hack it. Hung to feeders this morning as well. Been shooting the bow. Getting ready for the 3-d in Paris. Gotta pratice ranging. Short on time, gotta go!

Got settled in to Eastern which is my college. It is located in Wilburton, OK. I have to WMA around me, one is Yourmans and the other is Robbers Cave. I went to Yourmans yesterday and was impressed and dissappointed. It is loaded with food plots, and looks really good. Not to mention the 3 bucks i saw run off a food plot at the entrance. One downside to Yourmans is that it is a walk-in only WMA. I will wait til the Middle of Septemeber to check it out a bit more in depth.

I plan to check out Robbers Cave sometime later this week. The oklahoma wildlife dept says it's mostly mountains and pine trees....but you can drive!!!!

Still haven't found a place to keep my bow. I'm thinking of just keeping it in the back of my truck, and going to the WMA to shoot it for practice. I can't seem to find this 3-D range I was told about and I can't find anybowhunters that live here in wilburton!

    Well, more will come later.

I spent most of last weekend working on my place. I attached my brushhog to the Ford and mowed my two plots from last year, and mowed a few other places where I intend to disc up. I mow one area down really short. I plan to put in a NO PLOW food plot in it JUST to see if they really work.

Checked my feeders, and was saddened to see that the cows can reach them. Both buckets were dumped since the cows figured out how to turn them upside down. So I raised them up about 6 more foot lol.

I decided to brave the college regulations and campus police, and now have my bow stashed under the seat in my truck. I brought a target with me too so i could practice up here. I went to the YOURMAN WMA last night and shot with some buddies I have up here. Also looked the place over, and glassed a bachelor group of 6 bucks. One was a brute!

I figure that I should be ready to scout it out in mid-september. It's just too hot to do anything now. Might take me a squirrel hunting scouting trip . It looks real good!

We just like a little over a month to go. this season is looking great from the deer numbers I am seeing.

I found myself an awesome scouting tool this week. It's a aerial photo mapping softwarre thats FREE. It is found at www.wildlifedepartment.com and I think it is only good for Oklahoma residents, but it's AWESOME. Been shooting the bow when I can. Kinda hard since I am in college, but at least I have a place to shoot now. Kinda clouded up yesterday, rained for a little while. the weather has turned out nice this week with highs in the high 80's.

Just for the heck of it, I am posting a picture of me shooting in my yard. I like a journal with pictures in it and this give you an idea of what I look like when I am practicing.

You need two things Kyle....a bow with your correct draw length.....AND....some photoshop skills so you can cover up some of that ugly...

I can't believe your highs have been in the 80's. We've hit 100 everyday this week with heat indexes above 110!!

Old Big Cedar must be blocking that cool weather from coming our way.

I was going to mention the same....you look really stretched out. You'll shoot so much better with a shorter draw......get to the shop!!!!!

I am home for the weekend, and have tons of work to get done. I have to mow a lawn in a little bit, then I have to hurry back here so I can finish my foodplots. We got quite a bit of rain last night, so hopefully the ground will be a little on the soft side. I sure hope so, because I am going to be using a tiller for most of it. Temps are supposed to be near 95 or so today. Gotta love working hard in the scorching sun. Nothing like heat stroke, and dehydration to get a deer in the fall .

Corn feeders were empty this morning, so I had to fill it back up. Took 16 days for 40 lbs of feed to empty. The deer have finally found it. There are tracks everywhere.....cows, deer, turkey, coons. It's amazing how fast they found it. Maybe I can get me a game camera tommorrow at Bass Pro.

The Oklahoma Wildlife Expo is going on this weekend too. My family and I are going to meet up with some buddies from this forum sometime. I can't wait to see the guys, and meet their families. It should be lots of fun.
