    Default HoytNmuzzyboys Log

I went through and was reading some of the logs and notes on here and decided to start one up myself. I know it's a lil late so I will back track from the start of my season.

    Overview of summer:
Been shooting my bow atleast 3 times a week for a few hours each shoot. Shot quite a few 3D tourneys. As well as some other shoots.
I had my trail cameras up all summer scouting for me. Only moved one stand and put about 5 others up. Had one of my trailcameras bashed up pretty good and my sd card stolen. Had to deal with people putting stands up with out permission. Looked like it was going to be a rough season. Then opening day rolled around....

    Oct. 1st a.m.--
Opening morning I got into the stand a lil later then I wanted to. Still had about 30min or so b4 light. My tree stand is faceing west, the deer ushally come from the east and go west or they come from the west and go east. Didn't see anything for the longest time. At about 7:45 I said ok pack up and head home for the morning. Well I started playing with my video camera, I got to changeing some of the settings when I hear the famous ch ch ch ch. I look up and I see a nice 3 to 3 1/2 year old doe standing 30 yards from me behind a bunch of brush and some trees. I turn the camera on, grab my bow, while in the mean time she is walking closer and closer. She gets on the trail that looks like cows have been walking up and down because its one of the main trails they use. She walks past where I had ranged to be 20 yards, when I catch movement from where she came from, another deer is about 40 yards behind her. Well at this point i'm concentrateing on her, shes at about 22 yards I draw back as she kinda turns her head to look to the south. I'm all sighted up stareing down my peep and about ready to squeeze the trigger when she decides to start walking again, I grunt with my mouth to stop her, squeeze the trigger and let the Beman and muzzy do there job. She mule kicks and takes off running, she ran 15-20 yards and expired. Now the other deer took off running straight west after I harvested the first doe. Well about 2 minutes later here comes the other doe checking out what had happened, so I knocked another arrow grabbed my rangefinder, deer was at 33 yards,I drew and waited for the deer to walk into my shooting lane and grunted to stop it. Deer froze, I released, put a perfect double lung shot on the deer, it ran about 25 yards and expired. I got my phone out and called my dad, he was just as pumped as I was. He left work and came out and helped me load them in the back of my truck. All in all it was a great opening day!! First time on opening day I have ever taken a deer first time out!!
    Oct 1st p.m.--
On top of it being a great morning I get a phone call at about 2pm from my dad. He asked if I was planning on going out hunting tonight because he was going to be able to get away from work early and wanted to go with. So we meet up at the house, I start loading his stuff up and he said wheres your bow? Well lil did he know he was going to my best stand on all the property I have to hunt. And I was going with him.. with a camera in my hand instead of a bow. We start walking down the side of a beanfield when he says isn't this where you got all those pictures of those 2 really nice bucks.. I kinda laughed and said yea sure is, he said why are we going here tonight? I looked at him and said because YOU are going to harvest one of those nice bucks tonight. A lil background on why I took my dad to this stand.. He doesn't get much time to hunt due to work. Even on the weekends he is doing something work related. So as long as the stars line up right I put him in places where he has the best chance to harvest a deer. So the night goes on were whispering back and fourth when he looks to his left as i'm looking kinda to the right, and he said shooter buck, i'm thinkin ok the here come the i got ya's already and its opening night. Well I look to the field edge and guess what I see. One of the nice bucks that I have been getting photos of. He never came within 70 yards of us, but it was nice to see a dandy buck out b4 it was dark. Dad was pumped just to see a nice deer on its feet. That was the only deer we saw that night but it sure was a nice one to see. On the walk back to the truck once we got away from our stand site, dad told me sure was nice getting to spend some time up in a tree with you again. We used to hunt out of buddy stands b4 I even started hunting. I would go with dad and watch him and I would pretend I was hunting haha. Once I started hunting, dad would sit with me and just watch. Being 10 years old and being in the woods at dark alone scared me to death. haha. Anyway, it had been years since we were in the same tree together, and he was more excited about getting to spend time with his boy in the woods, then seeing that deer I think haha. All in all the entire day was a great day!

    Oct 2nd p.m.--
Went out and hunted a spot I have been hunting for about 8 years. The farmer rotates corn and beans every year and when the plant beans the deer seem to disapear. Well this year its corn and there are deer everywhere! I'm sitting in my stand by 4:30pm and the woods start come'n alive between 5:30 and 6. Turkeys gobblin and I can see a few deer out in cattle pasture about 150 yards away. Well about 15min b4 dark 4 does and a lil 6pt come strollin by at about 15 to 20 yards. I opted to not take another doe and let them walk. And that 6pt the thought never crossed my mind to even grab my bow. Did catch a glimpse of a decent sized body of a deer slip from the timber edge into the cornfield at dark. Could barely even see the body but I do know it was a decent sized deer. Rather it was a big mature doe or a decent buck i'm not sure.

Got a phone call from a buddy of mine that lives down in Western Illinois that put a big 160 class bruiser on the ground!

    Oct-4 p.m.
Was kinda late getting into the stand tonight, my sister had homecomeing and all that fun stuff, so she wanted me there to see her and take pictures with her. Well I got there and the first thing she said was "your seriously not wearing your camo in the pictures are you?" I laughed she got mad haha. She looked very nice blah blah blah haha. So as i'm walking to my stand I hear some turkeys, well since I have a turkey tag in my pocket this deer hunt just turned into a turkey hunt with the hoyt. I stalk up as close as I can, I get tucked in behind a few trees and well thats as far as it goes because one of the turkeys busted me. You can never underestimate the eyes thunderchickens have. Wow!! So I go to my stand and sit til dark, don't see a thing right. Well i'm walking back to my truck and there is a mama and her yearling eating grass 15 yards from my truck. Seriously If I would of just hid under my tonuea cover I would of seen more deer then in my stand haha.

Been out a few times since my last post here. Nothing really to write about other I have seen does and a few small bucks out and about pretty much everynight I go out. Went out tonight and saw nothing other then a few coons and a yote. Prolly won't be out much the rest of the week due to a funeral I will be attending. Until the next time, hunt safe and hunt smart and most of good luck!

Sorry I have not wrote in awhile. I have been out a few times since I last wrote. Trying to stay out of most areas untill the rut kicks in here. Went out the other night and had a doe chase a yote across a picked bean field. One of the only days I have not taken my vid camera out with me. Go figure. Had a skunk smell the bottom of my tree lastnight and it wouldnt leave. Didn't get out tonight due to our Monday night trainings at the firehouse. I'm planning my trip to Hancock county over the halloween weekend. Check out the post I made in the Prostaff room and let me know what you think. Tomm. night i'm going out with a good buddy of mine to do some filming on one of the best places in the county to hunt. Hopefully we will get some great footage and he will harvest a great buck on camera! Other then that just dealing with somethings going on in the family and what not. Over the next week and a half or so I will be glued in my stands. Got a few nice bucks to harvest this year, hopefully i'm lucky enough to harvest one of them. Good luck to all in the pursuit of your trophy, rather it be horns or meat, if it's a trophy to you thats all that matters!
Don't forget..... If a kid ask's you about hunting don't just tell them about it, show them!

Well the day started off overcast and cold. Got up today and decided not to hunt do to bad wind direction. Well finally made the call to go out at about 3pm. Boy am I glad I did. First off it was going to be a good night cuz my dad was going hunting with me. We don't get much time to hunt together much anymore. So dad takes me up and drops me off in the truck, I get my Scentblocker on and grab my backpack and bow and head off down to my stand, dad takes off and is heading to his stand about half a mile away. When I see a buck standing out in a picked bean field. I could tell he was a decent buck but couldn't tell for sure. I grab my binos take a look and about dropped my bow. This deer has got to be close to being a booner. Never seen him on the farm we were hunting. I have trail cameras out exp. this time of year and have not seen him. So I take a knee and as i'm admireing this awesome creature, call my dad on his phone and he stops and says he can see him too, I catch movement off to his right, out steps another buck, he's prolly a high 140 class to 150 class buck. Both of these bucks could of been under his stand at anytime, as the direction the were going wasn't far from his stand. The big boy starts to run across the field towards a unpicked corn field. I watch him untill I lose him in the corn. Other buck darted off into the cornfield as well. So i'm pumped my dads pumped, we say goodbye and good luck to each other on the phone. I get up and start walking to the area where my stands at, and another buck!! At first I thought... wait a min that looks like a decoy... my first thought was darn tresspassers. Then I saw his ear flicker, at this point i'm wishing I can just snap my fingers and boom be in my stand. So I take two more steps and the buck bounds down into an old irrigation ditch. I sneak to my stand. Get all set up, i'm on stand about ten min when it starts down pouring. 30min goes by when I look to my right about 70 yards out in the picked bean field and see 3 does standing out eating. I'm thinking.. It's pouring down rain, what are these deer doing out here haha. The does came within 25 yards me just grazeing. It was hard not to pick up the bow and give one a dirt nap. But I kinda figured with this time of year anything at anytime could happen and have'n 2 under my belt already, I choose to pass them. A lil 7pt came by after the does had gone on about there way. 3 good bucks on there feet today and couldn't be happier with my day in the deerwoods. I'll be goin out in the morning early to see what happens tomm.

Its funny you brought up about thinking that buck was a decoy cause I was out on kibbe the other day and I walked up on a doe in a clearing and I was like, "what is that decoy doing out here?" and then I saw another deer poke its head out and realized what was going on....LOL

    Good luck with those bucks...

Weather was overcast and cool. Wind was shifting quite a bit, so I decided to hunt in a spot where the wind was blowing my scent out over a field for the most part. Well I get climbed up in my stand get everything set up and have high hopes of seeing a shooter. So i'm sitting there and hear what sounds like something scratching on my tree. I turn my head to the left and a treerat is looking me dead in the eyes. I could of reached out and grabbed him. So after getting scared half to death by turning and seeing the tree rat, it starts to spit rain. Not a bad thing at all. Then the wind blows and it down pours on me, now this wouldn't be so bad... except I got rained on for 2 hours lastnight. So tonight i'm sitting there in the rain thinking well the deer were on there feet lastnight so maybe they will be tonight. Nope nada, didn't see a thing. But rain or no rain anyday in the stand is better then a day at work. I'm going out to hunt from sun up till about 2 then gonna grab some grub then head back to the stand tommorrow. Untill tommorrow night, stay safe and goodluck everyone!
