    Default aujacks mumblings 2008

    Oct. 13
    The Monday before rifle season,
Dad and I were headed to my stand and in the road on the way was a 6ft. HUGE rattle snake . I had never seen one that big before, so anyways we continue onward to my stand and we ease up to the field and sure enough 2 does directly under the stand but trotted off after seeing us. Even though they ran off was PUMPED, so i get up to the stand and my dad drives off and i sit for about 2 1/2 hours and sure enough about 45 minutes until dark 8 does walk out at about 45-50 yards but i was not that comfortable with my shooting at this time so i let them feed and then they walked off just before dark. So that was my first hunt of the year and in my eyes was a great hunt.

This was the second day of rifle season and due to a homecoming dance the previous day I only got to hunt this afternoon. Seeing how i saw all those does on Monday i wanted to go back to that stand and get a crack at one with my rifle. so i sat for about 20 minutes before 2 mature does walk out in an area that i had no shot because limbs were blocking my view (limbs have now been trimmed ) and then something spooked them and they left. I sat until dark and didnt see another deer.

Ok so I had a football game last night that went late so my dad didnt want to hunt this morning but we did go this afternoon. Well i initially wanted to hunt a stand that always produces so me and my dad checked it out and it was nasty in that area, no sign of deer since the rain (most plots were tore up since the last rain). So i decided not to hunt that stand and hunt another close by. Well my dad dropped me off under my stand and i climbed up and sat down. As my dad was driving off i could still see him driving about 50 yards away i look into the field and sure enough 2 does walk out! Ha in disbelief i texted my dad laughing and he was shocked because he just dropped me off. well one of the does ate for a while and another left. The doe that stayed was milling around at about 220 yards. My dad had told me to shoot a doe if i had the opportunity, i had never made or tried a 200+ yard shot but i was curious to see if i could make it. She stood broadside and i put the crosshairs a little high. I shot and missed over her back. She wasnt spooked but eventually eased her way out of the field. I was not dissapointed because i had never even practiced and that long of range because normally where i hunt the shots are 100 yards or closer. I kept sitting and saw 3 more does in the same area as the other 2 but i decided to let them feed. So in all today i saw 5 does and 11 turkeys. I will hunt all day tomorrow and so far am very pleased with my 2008 deer season.

Turn those frowns upside down, Jack... Enjoying yourself out there is what it is really about. Tomorrow is another day and you will get your chance. Congatulations to your dad on his doe...

Since Jack is at school, I will fill in for this latest entry. Both he and his Dad were skunked yesterday afternoon (unless armadillo's count). S

This morning i sat in a great spot where i always see deer. It is deep in the woods. I get in about 10 minutes before light (630) so im just sitting and waiting and at about 7 i hear a lot of crasing and grunting getting closer, i was pumped because i thought a monster would step out. I then begin to see 2 does in some thick stuff, and then a big bodied-small racked buck come out into the lane in front of me. so i wait and lately my dad has told me to shoot as many does as possible so that was my mind set. I see the 2 does making there way to the only clearing i have to my left and the first one stepped out into the clearing and BOOM she dropped on the spot. The other doe ran about 30 yards and then trotted right up to the dead one and then BOOM she dropped also. Dad texted me and i told him what i got and we had both deer dressed by 8 and them dropped them off at the processor to be made into link sausage. Needless to say me and my dad were very pleased with this morning's success.

Yesterday Morning i sat until about 930 or so and all i saw was a doe i spooked walking back to the truck. Yesterday evening i sat with one of my brothers so he could hopefully get a deer, We only saw 1 young buck, i couldn't tell how big but he wouldnt have been shot anyways because my brother has already killed a big buck so the small ones are off limits to him. Over all we had fun but I will hit the woods all day Tuesday to get a crack at the big boys.

Sat that morning and saw a young buck i think he was a 6 or a very young eight and that was it. That afternoon i got skunked but my dad on the other hand had a doe walk out before he even sat down and he shot at her when she was only 15 yards and missed! but luckily she was a stupid doe and ran back to the food plot and then he ended up dropping her LEFT HANDED he is a show-off. but we don't know how he missed the first shot.

This Morning I saw 2 nice gobblers but no deer. On the way out in the truck we saw 4 does and a very nice 8 point. This afternoon I spooked a deer in the field on my way to my stand and also saw another gobbler. In the truck on the way back we saw a MONSTER buck i couldnt tell how big but he was crossing the road onto our property . Don't know when i will be able to hunt next because my dad is going to illinois wednesday to hunt with River's Bend . I hope he gets a Monster! but i hope i get a crack at that buck i saw crossing the road, he is a booner.

It sounds like you and Dad are having a great season so far Jack. The blacktail rut just kicked in here, and I love it.
