12-gauge lethal range on coyote

Greetings from a coyote hunting newbie. I have been out a few times out here in southwestern Colorado with no success yet. (All the yotes I hear during archery/rifle season are snowed in good at 10,000+ feet, so I am still trying to find their buddies below snowline) My elk rifle, which is a .300wsm, is currently out of commision as my scope is going in for repairs. If I decide I like predator hunting I am going to pick up a .22-250, but for now my only two other long guns are a 10/22 and an 870 12-gauge. I can't convince myself that the .22lr is suficient, so my question is what lethal range should I expect out of my 870 with 3" #4 buckshot? What choke is best? Any personal accounts of coyotes shot with this setup would be great!

That 10/22 will work, don't kid yourself, and you'll probably get better range and definately get better accuracey than w/ your 870.

Use a slug out of your shotgun...Your range will go through the roof compared to buckshot...With a slug at a yote I would have no problem taking a shot at 150 yards.........With buckshot I wouldn't shoot over 40.......BTW the 22 would work if it's a magnum....

You have to remember a yote isn't that thick so a slug has a farther killing power than on a deer...It's just a matter of how comfortable you are with a long shot....

What effect will the slug have on the fur? I've heard buckshot is a little easier on fur at further out, but certainly not at close ranges. Also, I do not have a cylinder bore or improved cylinder choke for that gun, what can I use when firing a slug? (I was going to use a modified for the #4) Thanks for all the good imput so far!
