It lal depends on the distance and what you have for money buying shells! Any gun is good but if money is a factor I would say the .223, still even a good coyote gun to 300 yards [close to it anyways] guns are reasonable, shells are dirt cheap, you will noit take barrels out as quick as soem of the wildcat varmet rifles and they are usually deadly accurate! If money is a factor they are cheap to shoot if not then any cal is good, know a few guys from here that head to Montana every year with the 22-250, and 220 swifts, but I also knwo they have worn out barrels in a few days of shootign the hot shells!!
You can also add the .17 HMR, 22 Hornet, .17 Remington, 221 Remington Fireball, 204 Ruger and the 222 Remington. They would all work great on prairie dogs.

what do you mean wore out barrels?? Also is a 3-9 scope enough?? Thanks
Yes, a 3-9 is fine for shooting prairie dogs. It's really all about what the shooter prefers.
I would prefer 3-14 or 4-24 for shooting at smaller targets at long distances.

That's what I am wondering. Are the 25-06 bad about this?!?!
I would bet thatthe barrels "shot out" were on semi auto wepons & the careless owner did not allow the barrel time to cool. My .22-250 has thousands of rounds through it all ready & still shoots accurately, but mine is a single shot thus it doesn't get the rapid fire torture on the semi auto wepons.
I am using a 6-18x50 scope on this .22-250, no gophers this far north, so I have to settle for Coyotes & Rabits as well as lots of target shooting.
Savage, what gun is that??
Hey ya Sun-of-a Gun; The photo is of my Thompson Center, Encore in .22-250 Remington, I have a 209x50 Blakpowder barrel as well as a .260 Remington barrel for the same wepon. IMHO the T/C Encore is the most versatile shooting platform on the market.
This is the same wepon in .260 Rem trim sporting a 4-12x44 Vivitar Scope.

we have a Remington 700 .22-250 with a 6-18x Redfield scope on it and that thing is like a sniper. we reload .52gr boatail match bullets. man that gun can drive tacks every shot! up here we dont have prairie dogs, just groundhogs
