    Default How High?

how high up do ducks have to be before you won't consider calling to them?

i've had 200 or 300 ducks fly over my house every night for quite some time now, but they are way up there.

i can hear them chuckling to each other, other than that, i don't know how high they are. i'd guess a couple hundred feet or so.

i was just wondering what y'alls limits are when calling.

for me it all depends on how the weather is and if I think they will hear the call

If I can hear them....they can hear me!

Actually I will always try a quick hail cadence and if anything shows interest I will break it down a bit more. If no interest is shown from the group...I mumble the word "migrators" and save my breath!

    thanks guys

i've called to these ducks in the past, and have actually turned a couple groups, but alas, i don't have any deeks, so they never come in.

mind you, i've never hunted them seriously, in fact, i couldn't even shoot them if they ever did come in; no stamps, no steel. but i thought if i could get their attention that maybe it's time to get serious about hunting them.

    these were flying mallardman

and, anyway, it's a moot point. i'm betting they were mallards and their water source has frozen up, i haven't seen them in about a week now.

still plenty of Canadas though, i saw well over 200 yesterday.

I guessed they were flying Tominator, thats why I said if you had an open pocket of water to call them to, then you should try it...............many times when a lake down here freezes over the ducks will keep a small pocket open and it makes it easier to call any duck within earshot to that pocket

oh, OK, gotcha. i misunderstood bud. sorry.

yeah, there's no open water around here at all. makes me believe that maybe they were migrants and they were heading for parts unknown.

i mostly hunt in the woods, so if i can see 'em i call to 'em. i hunted near jerome AR yesterday in flooded fields, and the guy i was with wasn't calling at many ducks that were a little ways off. i was like cmon man lets call to 'em. he said they wouldnt pay any attention from that far away. oh well, his place his rules!

to bad this storm opended the ice back up again chris.....i have a honey hole down on the river that fills right in with mallards and blacks. throw out the deke's and put away the calls thses birds have been quacked at all year and most of my luck has come shutting up and let the deke's pull them in. Ive only been out once the second southern season opened dec. 18 but have limited out all 5 trips since.
