Your input is needed on a seminar

Ok, here's your chance to say what you would like to see presented at a turkey hunting seminar.
I have been asked to conduct one for the Women In The Outdoors Program in the early spring of next year and I would really like to hear some of your ideas.
What would you like to see covered?
How much time would you devote to the seminar?
What could I include that would appeal strictly to the ladies?
(Cant get Brad Pitt....sorry!)
I want to make this seminar both entertaining and informative so your input is important to me.

Please don't forget that turkey hunting is turkey hunting....it doesn't matter which gender is doing the hunting. I think calling techniques are one of the most important parts of turkey hunting, so that would be a good thing to cover, along with hunting blinds and other ways of concealing one's presence from the turkeys being hunted. You should fit your presentation to your audiences' level of expertise. Are they beginning hunters? Then you would want to start with the very basics and give a general overview of everything. If it is a more experienced crowd, then give a quick overview with more details on different techniques.

Are you going to have any audience participation activities? Or will it be only an instructional presentation? If it will NOT include audience participation, I wouldn't go longer than one hour. After an hour people start to get restless no matter how interesting the topic may be. If you add audience participation, you could add at least another half hour to a possible full hour, depending on what they might be doing.

That's ok that you can't get Brad, we all know he is pretty busy. Maybe you could get Vin Diesel???

Seriously though, I can't think of any one thing about turkey hunting that is different for women than men. (besides how we "relieve" ourselves in the outdoors and you probably don't want to touch on that subject! LOL) I believe the whole idea behind the women's hunting groups is to provide women the opportunity to ask questions and learn without feeling stupid. It is just easier for women to talk to other women about some things. Make sure you stop frequently to ask if there are any questions, and stress that there are no stupid questions, no one is born knowing how to hunt!

Good luck with the presentation!!! It sounds very interesting!

This is not the first seminar I have done but I just wanted some input from the ladies as to what "they" would like, this is the first class I have held for the ladies though.
Basically it would go something like this:
Short history of turkeys and their life cycle.
Demonstration of various calls and their meanings.
How to locate birds and set up on them.
Proper use of camoflage.
Hands on use of calls for those attending and some basic instruction on their use. (I prefer the slate calls for new hunters they usually are the easiest to use.)
Safety Instruction and discussion of various shotguns and loads that may be used.
Finally caring for your turkey once it is harvested.
After each portion of the program I have a period for questions and answers but I have found that it's best to hold them until the end of each portion so that things do not get off track.
In regard to instructing women vs men. I have found that most women will learn quicker and accept new ideas easier than men due to the fact that they have not already developed habits that may have to be overcome during the instruction. I have found this to be especially true when teaching the proper use of a handgun to women.

Thanks Jen, that was brought up also in an Email I recieved, I plan on touching on that when I do the safety and choice of shotguns and loads portion.
An ill fitted shotgun can cause many problems as well as the magnum loads. When I am asked about this in the youth classes I always tell the folks to go to a good dealer in the area and get fitted for the shotgun they may pay a little more than they would at one of the chain outfits but the service they will get both during and after the sale will far outweigh that couple of extra bucks.

Sounds like you have a good grasp of your class. One thing I was amazed from talking with turkey hunters is that not everyone knows the difference between a hen or tom especially beginners.

I know not everyone does this but I do not like to shoot the turkey while they are in strut. This would be good thing to bring up especially if they want to mount it.

Also remind your audience to quietly take your safety off. This can send a turkey running if it is loud.

Sounds like a very good seminar! Wish I was attending. And a very good idea to not use mouth calls, that would be an entire seminar in itself! LOL I still can't get the hang of them, tickles the roof of my mouth....but my little boy does great with them after trimming them down a little...guess it's just not my thing!

A call maker thats a friend of mine is making some of them specifically to fit a womans or youngsters mouth. Many folks have had this problem because of a smaller palate.
