Turkey Tip Contest Winner: Cole Wallace
The Realtree Turkey Tips Contest began this week, and we've already received a bunch of great entries! The winner of this week's contest, and the recipient of a brand-new ThermaCell, is Cole Wallace of Missouri. Check out Cole's turkey tip below, and be sure to submit your own tips to the contest (click here to get started). We'll be giving away great prizes for the best turkey tips all spring. Next week's prize will be a turkey call package from H.S. Strut, including a new Ring Zone friction call and a Squealing Hen.
I carry five to seven cheap foam feeding-hen decoys in a mesh duck decoy bag. When all else fails, I place them in a field where I know that gobbler, or sometimes more importantly, his hens, are going to visit at least once that day. I set them up just like a real feeding flock, and every time I've done this the real hens that enter the field don't recognize this new flock and come to investigate. More often than not they are dragging an old thunder chicken with them. The sheer number of decoys seems to calm them down, and they come right up and feed beside my decoys. I sometimes use a full strut decoy, but always with a jake fan. That way if it's a beat up 2-year-old, he doesn't feel so intimidated. -- Cole Wallace
