Fall 2010 Granite State Turkey Hunt Outlook

Published by Ted Walski, N.H. Fish and Game Turkey Project Biologist | September 5, 2010 | 0 comments

Numerous sunny days during spring and summer 2010 meant good hatching weather, resulting in many turkey broods with good numbers of young. Because of early hatching during May, large, pheasant-sized poults were out and about by August.

Long Archery Season

Archery hunters can take a turkey of either sex during the long bowhunting season from September 15 through December 15. The entire state is open, with the exception of Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) A in northernmost New Hampshire.

Expanded Fall Turkey Shotgun Season

For those who don't archery hunt, New Hampshire also offers a five-day shotgun turkey season from October 11 – 15 (Monday through Friday). The range of this hunt has been expanded to cover most of the southern part of the state this year. In addition to the 8 WMUs in western New Hampshire that have had this season in place for a few years now, four new units in eastern New Hampshire (M, L, J1 and J2) will also be open for the fall shotgun turkey season in 2010. These new units include all of the towns in Rockingham, Strafford, Belknap and most of Carroll County.

Turkey License Required

The turkey license required to hunt turkey in New Hampshire covers both the spring and fall turkey seasons during a calendar year; the price is $16 for residents and $31 for non-residents. In addition to the turkey license, residents also must have a current N.H. hunting, archery or combination license, and nonresidents must have a big game hunting or archery license, depending on their hunting plans.

Hunters may take only a single turkey (of either sex) during the fall, either with bow and arrow during the archery season, or with a shotgun during the shotgun season. The bird must be tagged with the "fall" tag that comes on the turkey license.
