Well, we made it back from our hog hunt in one piece, but I tell you, I wondered at one point how the trip was going to turn out.
Several of us at Realtree were invited up to north central Tennessee by the guys at G5 to hunt hogs with Ken Moody. We were going to be filming the hunts and testing G5 products (broadheads mainly) for an upcoming DVD they will be releasing.
A lot of the G5 guys arrived on Sunday and Monday, whereas Michael Waddell, Chuck Sumners and myself would not be getting in till lunch on Tuesday. We were making the 4.5 hour ride up there when we got a call from Pete Crawford (G5 national sales manager) saying that he was just leaving the hospital. I said HOSPITAL? They had an accident that morning and had to rush Ken to the emergency room. So naturally I was on full alert and listening now. “What happened?” He said a big boar bayed up and charged us several times, hitting Ken three times before Burly (Burly Hall) could get an arrow in him.
Ken was messed up pretty bad and was put in the hospital for several days. I was speechless now and concerned for Ken. Pete said for us to keep on coming and that everything was still a go.
After hanging up with Pete, I started asking myself what in the world I had gotten into. I started sizing everyone up that was on the trip and all I could come up with was I was the fattest and the slowest of everyone. Not good qualities to have when a hog is chasing after you. LOL!!!!
As we continued our drive north, we began to wonder if this could be a trick, cause if ya’ll remember, Waddell hunted with Ken Moody in Africa a couple of years ago and he said he wouldn’t put it past Pete or Ken to play a trick on us. Then about that time Pete called to see how close we were and I asked him again was this for real about Ken and he assured me he was not kidding. In fact, he told me they got the whole thing on film!
About the time we arrived, they’d gotten word from the hospital that the boar had busted Ken’s knee in 3 places and he was cut deep in 5 places and would have to have surgery the next day. We went inside to review the footage and it was amazing to say the least. This boar just kept charging time and time again. It could have been a lot worse had Ken not stood and held the hog off by the ears until Burley could get an arrow in him.
All I could think about while getting ready for the afternoon hunt was how I was the fattest and the slowest. Well, I survived the first afternoon, but the adventure continues. I’ll let you know how the remainder of the hunt turned out in my next blog.
