Vane Talk

I have gotten several emails lately wanting me to describe and give my opinions on the new style vanes that are on the market. Mainly, the new Blazer vane and QuikSpins.

First up, Blazers. These vanes are very popular and offer a quiet flight, durable plastic, and maintains its speed and flat trajectory downrange. They steer mechanicals and the ferruled, small-cut fixed broadheads real well, ut if there is a negative, I really don’t think they steer larger or average-sized broadheads very well.

Next is the QuikSpins by NAP. They came in a variety of lengths: 2-inch, 3-¼ and 4 inch. I personally like the 3¼-inch vane; it provides excellent steering on any type of broadhead setup, and even when your setup is a little marginal, the air foil on the rear of the shaft is providing 300 percent more rotation than a 3% offset. That translates to extreme forgiveness. The QuikSpins are a touch slower at long distances, but, in my opinion, a slower hit is better than a fast miss.

In closing, I think both vanes are good vanes and will perform well. But, if you put a gun to my head I would go with the QuikSpin.

Hope this has shed some light. By all means, let us know what ya’ll think.

I have to go for the Blazers. I have used them for a couple years with no problems. I shoot Wasp Boss Bullet 75 grain broadheads. I tend to lean towards more speed for one main reason. Trajectory! Shooting a faster arrow allows me to not worry about being off a couple yards when judging distance. I also use a King Cobra single pin site so I don't ever have the "I used the wrong pin" excuse. At set the pin at 25 yards and I'm good out to 40 yards, I just hold a few inches high. I looked at the Quickspin but didn't go with them due to the decreased speed.

    Hey T-bone,
I havent personally shot the quick spins yet but hear they work well. I am shooting a whisker bisquit right now and plan to change to a drop away for next year. I have learned though with it that the blazer vanes produce more noise coming out of it because they are a bit more thick. They do not recommend the quick spins for it and the dura vanes have helped the best. I like the idea of the 3.25 quick spins and will keep them in mind for next year. Just some food for thought to all using the whisker on their bow. Happy hunting to all and will be leaving for Pike Co. Friday for a six day bow hunt. Hope to be sending some pics the week after. Good topic and keep em coming.

T-Bone I also have to lean more toward the Blazers, I have shot them both and have had better success with the Blazers useing fixed blade broadheads and mechanical. My opinion the Blazers are one of the best things that ever happened to archery hunting.

I've used 4" Duravanes for years, but on Monday I fletched 4 arrows with the 2" Blazer Vanes to try them out. My groups were about 1-2 inches higher than with the 4" vanes. I've always shot 100 grain Muzzys and switched this year to 100 grain Muzzy MX-3's, which is a pretty big fixed broadhead (1 1/4"). I'm pretty skeptical about changing my archery setup, so I'm not convinced just yet, but so far I've been happy with them.

I disagree... I have used Blazers for two years with some pretty nasty broadheads. They fly great. I normally shoot 3 blade 100 grain muzzys, and they fly just like field points with blazers!
Ive heard that the quickspin glue doesnt adhere very well too.
