Crystal Ball

I've tried to dive into some detail about bow gear and how to set up a bow properly. But I want to switch gears for a minute just to get a read on how high gas prices are going to affect your hunting schedule this fall, if at all.

So will $4 gas prevent you from traveling or buying a new bow this year? I looked into my crystal ball for the answer, but it didn't work.

Hang in there,
T-Bone

I will still be able to make my yearly trip from Tennessee to Ohio to bowhunt in November.

    Hey T-Bone,
Nothing will stop me from going on My trip to Illinois in mid November. You would have to take an arm from me and i would still find a way. I will not be buying a new bow because ive yet to shoot one with the one i have now. I normally go 4 to 5 yrs before buying another. I feel technology is good enough to last a little while even though i would love a new one each year.

    Hey T-Bone,
I don't travel like most people. I go to the same hunting camp every weekend, which is about 2 1/2 hours from my house, but the gas prices will not stop me from going. People keep saying that they want go any where b/c of gas prices, but everybody needs to realize that gas prices are not going back down to 2 dollars anymore. I am not going to stay at home and become a hermit. Talk to ya later.

    God Bless & Good Huntin'

T-Bone (AKA "Travis") - regarding gas prices - it definitely will increase the "guilt factor", but it's in my blood - Bow Hunting in Kansas - I do not plan to cut back much if at all. I hunt private land south of Osawatomie/Centerville, and public land around Clinton Lake Reservoir. I've put more than a few miles on my truck - maybe I need to get a used Compact Car, have the RealTree boys paint it "Casa de Bone" AP Realtree, so it can cross over as a "mobile stand". I'll adjust is my short answer - maybe cut out a few trips to Cabelas - but cut out Bow Hunting - not as long as I'm a standin'. Peace out and God Bless! PB from KC

I think it will certainly affect how i hunt. I usually hunt in the morning then go home for lunch then drive back for the afternoon. I will probably just hunt in the morning or afternoon or just hunt all day. Gas prices surely make things tighter so I wont be able to buy all the things I had wanted for this season.

The farm I hunt is 20 minutes away from my house. I remember when I did not think twice about going there 5 times a week. Now, I am thinking about it. I think I am going to make some long weekends and grab the camping equipment so I am not driving back an forth.

As far as traveling anywhere I usually do that in the spring. Deer hunting is really good around here so I really do not have the desire to travel to other states for deer hunting. I am planning a Black Bear hunt in the spring of 2010. Who knows what gas prices will be then...

I am not one to get a new bow every year regaurdless of budget. If I like a bow I will shoot it for two to three years before I start looking for other options. I never sell my old bows either. I just can't see selling something that works just fine and has harvested plenty of deer. It is to me like guns are to some people. They have a whole cabinet full of guns. Some because they shoot well, some just for memories, some for their children to shoot later in life. I get attached to my bows, it only stands to reason since we put so much time in together. If a bow becomes an extension of your arm it is hard to just put it on the shelf and buy a new one to take its place. Then you have a new learning curve and more time to put into learning a new bow. I guess that probably makes me a nut. But hey I like being an archery nut.

got a shotgun, a rifle, and some compound bows, and a country boy can survive.....

Nope, it would take a whole lot more than 4 dollers a gallon to keep me from buffalo county wisconsin in november. Heck I would ride my peddle bike if I had to.

I think it will be trying for alot of people. It's not easy paying 90-100.00 to fill the tank. Best way is to car or truck pool, friends together spliting cost of gas. Gas prices won't slow us down, not yet. I don't plan on thinking of Obama or McCain come Oct/Nov.

nothing is going to stop me from elk hunting the mountains of idaho, it's over 300 miles from my house and on a good day i get 8 mpg in my truck, but where going to take a 2 weeks off so it will cut down on the trips up there, and we're going to try harder to kill our antelope in the same trip. i also love my new bow i got this summer, those speed goats don't have a chance with arrows flyin 337 fps at em, it was totally worth the $1500, my wife doesn't agree though i'm still in the dog house on that one

Fuel costs have not deterred me from joining friends in North Dakota this fall for a deer hunt. Diesel is most expensive and I'll be hauling a camper to boot. But it has changed my driving habits now, in anticipation. I bought a 500cc scooter (Piaggio MP3 500) and have parked the Ford dually. Figure it's saving me $100/week in fuel.

Well I am glad I bought me a new hoyt last year. This gas thing is getting way out of hand. I dont think anything could keep me from hunting, however it is probabaly going to change up the amount of time I am able to go. I will end up takiing fewer trips out to my familys land. the time I will go this year instead of staying 2-4 days i will end up staying mor elike 4-6 days. Hopefully I will get the same amount of days in the stand just going to have to adjust on those days.

    No way T Bone
Going bow hunting and making improvements to my bow gives me something to take my mind off the struggling economy and rising gas prices. So it's not going to hinder me one bit in fact I just bought a new Matthews last week

T Bone, gas prices are not to be worried about. Just think of the fun you have when your out hunting or out shooting the bow. I just drove from IL to PA to go to Bob Foulkrods Bow Bootcamp / School, a great experience to sharpen anyone's bow skills. Gas was cheaper than I budgeted..As far as buying a new bow, not for a few years because I bought a Black Ice last year and still love it. I have tried many other bows this year and still prefer it. Maybe in a few more years technology will make a bow that I personally like better...

T Bone this will be my best hunting season yet. I will be traveling from Florida to Ohio and Illinois in the first 2 weeks of November for archery season in those states of course I and will be going on scouting trips in September so I will have many dollars invested in gas but I will be splitting the gas bill with my step son. As for a new bow I will continue to shoot my High Country for a couple more years I haven't seen anything on the market that shoots a $1000 better than the one I have.
    God Bless
